Older personsexpo By ROBYN BRISTOW International Day of Older Persons is being celebrated on Sunday, October 1. To celebrate, the annual Waimakariri Older Person’s Expo is being held on October 2, at the Rangiora RSA, to which local residents and the community are invited. The Expo, which opens its doors at 10am is free to attend. Awide range of community organisations will be hosting stalls including Rangiora Stroke Club, Dementia Canterbury, Age Concern, Driving Miss Daisy, North Canterbury MiniBus Trust, Presbyterian Support and many more. There will be raffles and spot prizes available, before the expo finishes at 12 noon. It will be followed by alight lunch and hot drinks, with the RSA restaurant open for visitors to buy ameal. There will also be entertainment and live music to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Vicki Lucas, Presbyterian Support’s Enliven Area Manager, says it’s important to recognise the positive contribution older people make in the community. ‘‘Many are still working or volunteering, some care for partners, older parents or grandchildren.’’ Vicki says by 2034, just over afifth of New Zealand’s total population — around 1.2 million people —will be over 65. ‘‘Older New Zealanders are healthier, living longer, and taking an active and positive approach to ageing. ‘‘Being healthy and maintaining connections are vital to the wellbeing of older people so they can lead happy, connected and fulfilling lives.’’ The International Day of Older Persons has been celebrated in the Waimakariri region for over 30 years, and events are organised by acommittee of community members and providers. In recent years this expo did not eventuate due to Covid limitations and potential risks. With restrictions now lifted the committee are looking forward to holding this again and wish to thank the Rangiora RSA for donating their venue. New mini bus transport option The North CanterburyMini Bus Trust is running anew transport servicefor North Canterbury’s older or disabled peopletoChristchurch health appointments. The service is acollaboration between North Canterbury Citizen’s AdviceBureau (CAB), Salvation Army and EnlivenPresbyterian Support. It will offer transport options when the St Johnsshuttleserviceisnot available. Returntrips to Christchurch cost $45, plus asupport person or carercan travelfor free. The trust has acar available for the service which can take adriverand three people,plus one foldup wheelchair or awalking frame. Costs may varyifthe pickup is outside the borough of Rangiora. The new serviceisabout helping the community meet their needsfor hospital appointments, says the trust’s administration person, Helen Hewerton. ‘‘The St John Service is avery good service, but sometimes peoplecan’t get their appointmentsinthat timeframe. Everyone who has used the service so far has really loved it because transport times are flexible,’’ Helen says. Peopleinterested in using the service need to contactthe CAB at 03 313 8822 to make abooking48hours beforea medical appointment. After the initialphonecall to CAB,the personwanting transport will be phonedbythe Mini Bus Trust driver to arrange apick up time. Rating changes proposed By DAVID HILL, Local Democracy Reporter Changes are being proposed to Kaikōura’s rates, including a$200targetedroading rate. Residents are being askedtogive feedbackbyOctober23onthe Kaikōura District Council’sdraft revenueand financing policy, which proposes changes to the district’srates. Chiefexecutive Will Doughty said the ratesreview was signalledinthe 2021/31 Long Term Plan. ‘‘We havegone through areally robust and comprehensive process and looked at everysingleactivity and at our funding needs.’’ Underthe draft policy anew targeted roading rate of $200 was proposed. An increase in ratestofund footpaths, streetlights,the harbour and town centre workswas also proposed.Atargeted rural recycling rate would alsobereintroduced.
