Local Democracy Reporter
Tamariki (children) at Te Kura o
Tuahiwi will soon be learning to read
stories about their whānau.
Acollaboration between the school,
Tuahiwi Marae and Te Whare Wānanga
oWaitaha (University of Canterbury)
researchers has turned five Tuahiwibased
stories into children’s picture
books to help the school’s structured
literacy programme.
The books will be published in Te Reo
and have been illustrated by local Māori
artists Christine Harvey, Tōmairangi
Taiepa and Akeake Taiepa.
Former Te Kura oTuahiwi principal
Melanie TaitePitama says the school
became astructured literacy pilot
school three years ago.
As abilingual school with full
immersion classes, the teachers soon
found there were no resources in Te
Reo.
‘‘We decided it was beneficial to have
books written by our people, for our
people and in Te Reo, and the university
was able to find some funding,’’ Ms
TaitePitama says.
The stories are about the marae and
growing up in the kainga (village).
The university’s research team, led by
education senior lecturer Dr Amy Scott,
met with local kaumātua (elders) and
collected more than 20 hours of kōrero
(conversation) on video.
The stories included experiences of
kapa haka, mahinga kai (food gathering),
mahi īnanga (whitebaiting), the history
of the Kaiapoi Pā and intergenerational
experiences of the marae.
The footage was shared with local
rangatahi (former Tuahiwi pupils) to
choose the best stories.
Dr Scott says the research team will
continue to work with Ngāi Tūāhuriri to
research the impact of these stories in
the learning of 5to8yearolds at the
kura (school).
‘‘The project is already showing the
value of having stories immortalised and
working in collaboration.
‘‘We’re creating ablueprint for other
marae and iwi, and how they might go
through the process of capturing their
own stories as children’s books.’’
Te Kura oTuahiwi teacher Andrea Te
OhaereFox says the school now has the
use of some Te Reo resources, but she is
looking forward to having the new
Tuahiwi books in class.
‘‘In the past we’ve had to make our own
resources, or translated English
resources into Te Reo.
‘‘So to have someone make resources
for us has been great. It will be really
cool when we’ve got those actual local
stories for this area and we will be
learning them along with the tamariki.’’
The books will remain the property of
Ngāi Tūāhuriri.
Tuahiwi Marae kaikaranga (caller) Liz
Kereru said the videos and manuscripts
would be returned to marae’s archives.
‘‘Our long term goal will be to donate
the books into the local libraries so
people can share the stories and we will
be gifting the stories back to the
whānau.’’
