AMERICANA Each year, Mairet’s harvests about 20,000 melons with the help of seasonal workers, including local high school students. He and Karin initially started the business as a garden center. His wife grew up on a farm in Clinton County, and her family, the McCullohs, raised and sold sweet corn. Mairet grew up in rural Louisa County. “My grandfather row cropped, so I have an ag background. We lived on the farm growing up,” he said. “I always liked horticulture, and I’d always wanted a garden center. The more the business grew, it seemed like agriculture was the way it was tracking.” So they pivoted and got out of the tree and flower business (except for fall mums) and began focusing on produce. While the Highway 61 location is the main operation, Mairet’s also sells sweet corn, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and more at a stand in downtown Muscatine and one in DeWitt, Iowa. Some of the plants would be shipped to other farms, but most of them were intended for Mairet’s fields. Speaking above the noise of the fans that circulate the warm, moist air in the greenhouse, he explained that while a machine plants the seed, the plants were hand watered every day. “You begin with a seed. It’s a hope and a prayer that it comes up, germinates and grows. It’s a very exact science – how hot, how much moisture, and how much time,” he said of the greenhouse process.
