After student teaching and a year
of teaching in Lincoln, Illinois,
Hunter returned to an urban setting
at Des Moines – Central Campus
where he managed a farm, developed
an FFA chapter, and taught
animal science.
“Putting in many hours with
no extended contract, I realized I
needed to do self-advocacy,” he
said.
He took an opportunity to
work for the World Food Prize,
an organization committed to
bringing forward conversations
on increasing quantity, quality
and accessibility of food. He
became the director of the
Iowa Education Programs and
honed his consultant skills,
as well as helping with the
Iowa Youth Institute at ISU.
With the World Food Prize’s
commitment to feeding the
world, the main question asked was, “How
do we make a difference in the world?”
The North Scott Community School
District contacted Hunter as a consultant
for developing their ag program, seeking
to hire an ag teacher. Upon working with
Hunter, the district offered him the job as
the new agriculture teacher. After several
“thanks but no thanks,” he realized he
missed teaching and working with people
directly every day. Hunter finally found his
way back to the classroom.
At North Scott, Hunter continues his
belief in “hands-on learning and assisting
students in finding a future that is right for
them.” He and his team have grown the
program from a handful to more than 400
in junior high and high school.
Most recently, North Scott passed a $19
million bond referendum to build a Regional
Innovation Center including a diesel
mechanics program, construction technology
lab, landscape/turf courses, horticulture,
food science nutrition option, vet assistant
