It was ag teacher Dan Smicker who encouraged him to stay at Central DeWitt and not transfer to a smaller school district. Smicker led him on the path of leadership through involvement in FFA, and Hunter eventually became a state officer in the organization. He also credits teachers like Christine Gilroy, his publishing advisor, and Pam Burke, his Spanish teacher. “In Gilroy’s class, I learned the art of communication through the written word, and in Spanish class I was given opportunities to teach lessons on the topic of agriculture,” he said. With none of his friends in his lunch hour, Hunter took a Spanish/ English dictionary to the cafeteria and planned lessons. Attending an FFA Washington Leadership Conference and traveling to China with National FFA changed his life, both experiences showing him how to be an authentic leader. All of these opportunities were the “perfect storm” for Hunter – AG CAREERS leading him to Iowa State University and a future in teaching. While in college, Hunter traveled to Uganda with the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods. “It was there I held a malnourished child, and this experience gave me a drive to understand the value of teaching people how to grow their own food,” he said. He also had an epiphany: “There is lots of good to do in this world.” With his newfound drive, he returned to ISU and eventually student taught in Chicago to better understand those with different backgrounds. In Chicago, he began his life goal: “To build leadership in students through content and using work-based learning experiences to guide students to find careers that fit their interests.” Hunter was the top graduate in the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and in 2018 was selected as Jacob Hunter Central DeWitt Community High School Jacob Hunter consults with students working on a project in one of the ag classes he teaches at North Scott Community High School. After traveling the world and teaching in urban settings, he has landed back in Eastern Iowa where he encourages students to seek out ways to make a difference.
