AG CAREERS CLASS OF 1990 IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY became connected to the recruitment industry. The opportunity to work from home while she raised her children, as well as a flexible schedule, led her to a profession that combines her love of agriculture with her skills at networking and connecting with people. “I’m kind of like a realtor, but for jobs,” said Andersen who grew up on a crop and dairy farm in Fayette County in Northeast Iowa and has experience in ag sales and marketing as well. She has also taught as an adjunct in the agriculture department at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Andersen ventured out on her own five years ago after a connection she made after working for different ag industry associations and then a major ag company. She found her way into the recruiting business as an employee and she found she enjoyed the flexibility and the work. She started ExecutiveAg Recruiting and never looked back. From her years of experience, she said she would tell people who are just starting out and want a career in the ag industry to take a long view, as she did. “Your major in college is a starting point. You’re not locked into your first job for the rest of your life,” she noted. “Your career is a marathon, not a sprint.” She also said that getting work experience on farms or related jobs during summer and winter breaks and while in school is important. “You’re going to be a much better seed salesman if you’ve combined corn,” she said as an example. And lastly, realize that no job is perfect. “Every role you take on will have pros and cons,” she said. “They’ll depend on where you are in life.” For instance, it may be convenient and desired to travel until they have children. Then it may be more conducive to not be on the road.
