SOD FARM
Lance Frye, Jack Armstrong, Easton
Armstrong and Keaton Frye stand by
some roles of sod, which they sell for
both residential and commercial use.
The Armstrongs are family members
who were involved in the Seven
Cities Sod business in years past.
COMPANY: Seven Cities Sod
FUN FACTS: The company’s name came
about from the original seven communities
that made up the Quad Cities and
surrounding areas: Davenport, Bettendorf,
Moline, Rock Island, Silvis, Milan and East
athlete injuries, so organizations like
TPI are working to promote sod to
take its place.”
Like most farmers, a lack of rain
had an impact on their business this
year even though they can irrigate almost
70% of their fields using pivot
irrigation systems.
“Yeah, we have irrigation, but we
rely on Mother Nature as much as
we can, especially in the early part
of the summer. This year we had
to start irrigating in May, which is
one of the earliest dates I remember.
Normally we don’t get into
our irrigated fields until July and
August,” Frye said.
Despite the dry conditions, the
family continues to look for ways to break
into new markets including the ever-growing
Des Moines metro area.
“One of the options we are looking at is
creating satellite farms around Des Moines
and Waterloo, so we have our product closer
to these urban populations,” Frye said.
“We want to continue growing in our industry,
whether that is expansion regionally, or
expansion locally. We never want to be a
stagnant company. With that in mind, we
never want to lose sight of the pillars that
we’ve built our farm business on, which
are our quality of product and our personal
relationships.” n
