BY NANCY MAYFIELD EASTERN IOWA FARMER Showing goats, heifers, pigs and chickens at the Iowa State Fair as a kid, Francesca Schwartz and her family would spend almost two full weeks in Des Moines working and living closely – day-in and day-out –with people they had often just met. “We were at the fair for 11 days straight, so we had better like the people we were going to spend time with,” she said on a warm July day while unchaining a metal fence at the Lowden farm where she lives and raises beef cattle with her husband, Taylor, and their children, Oaklynn, 3, and Camden, nine months. “It’s really about the connections and having those friendships all around the state,” she said of her early affinity for agriculture. A self-described people person and a lover of rural living, Schwartz didn’t have a career in banking on her radar at first.
