My mom taught me a lot, but I’ve had to figure stuff out from scratch, too.” Bachus also is figuring out things like what kind of equipment she needs to record her videos, which run about once per week, and how to be more interactive with her audience. Even talking to the camera has proven more challenging than she expected. As a teacher, she is used to addressing people face-to-face; however, when you can’t see who you’re talking to, she said it isn’t quite the same. “It’s a different kind of public speaking for sure,” Bachus explained. “I’m pretty good at talking to people, but it’s very different learning how to talk to a camera.” She said she also is working on creating outlines before recording her videos, so she can present her information in a more organized manner. After all, teachers can improvise on the spot; Bachus is having to learn to re-record different video portions when necessary. “I’m gaining more confidence,” she related. “I just set up my (cell) phone on a tripod. The equipment part of it has been a learning process.” Gardening gratification Bachus said eventually, she would like to do more canning and cooking. However, in the spring, summer and fall gardening will be a main focus on her channel. She has 10 raised beds at home and the supplies to construct six more. “That will be a big game-changer,” she said of expanding the number of her gardens. “Some will have trellises, so I can start growing some vining plants like cucumbers and peas.” Some of the plants she has discussed growing with her viewers include tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Bachus said she is thankful to her mom and Tyler (who’s channel is called That Iowa Homestead) for their support, and to anyone who has taken the time to tune in to her channel.
