Wasdale Lakehead
Product: NatSol Zero Discharge Toilets
Supplier: NatSol, 01686 412653
info@natsol.co.uk, www.natsol.co.uk
In 2018 the National Trust asked NatSol to design
and supply waterless Zero Discharge toilets for a site
at the head of Wast Water, Cumbria. This is a very
busy site for walkers who head up the fells. There
is also a campsite there, but concerns had been
raised about the existing flush toilet provision and
the risk of polluting England’s cleanest lake. The
technology installed to clean the discharge had not
been reliable.
NatSol worked with the trust and with Crosby
Granger Architects who designed the building. The
project opened to the public in July 2020 and the
toilets are functioning as designed.
NatSol originally developed the Zero Discharge
model for The Royal Parks. New toilets were needed
for a site in the Isabella Plantation, Richmond
Park, London. These Zero Discharge toilets are
pumped out by vacuum sludge tanker after
around 6,000 uses per toilet. There are now such
toilets in Wasdale along with several urinals. The
interconnected tanks collectively contain waste
from over 50,000 uses.
NatSol designed the ventilation system that
makes the cubicles completely odour-free under
normal operation. The toilet pedestals are stainless
steel with Corian tops and are coated internally with
PTFE (Teflon). Maintenance is minimal.
Skänes Djurpark is a zoological park near Malmo,
Sweden, and home to Shaun The Sheep Land,
a themed venue where families can meet the
characters from the famous Aardman Studios
animated series ‘Shaun The Sheep.’
Regency Shepherd Huts built and delivered
a huge double shepherd hut which was the first
to land on Skånes’ new luxury glamping section
of the park. The remit of the double shepherd
hut was to be sumptuous, spacious, bright and
colourful and to appeal to children of all ages.
The exterior is clad in ‘ocean blue’ corrugated tin
with a curved black roof.
The interior has three bedrooms and sleeps
seven people. It contains a kitchen, dining area
and bathroom. However the standout feature is
the high-end kid’s bunk bed.
You’ll find a plethora of blues, yellows and reds
throughout the hut, which create a wonderfully
colourful, modern theme. Also on display are
traditional Victorian quirks which are all in
keeping with the original Shaun the Sheep TV
programme.
Håkon Lund, owner/director of the park, was
extremely complimentary of the high quality
workmanship and fine attention to detail in the
double hut.
