MORPC has big plans
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Central Ohio’s population continues to
grow and the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning
Commission is making plans to deal with
the accompanying future increase in traffic.
MORPC’s 2024-2050 draft Master
Transportation Plan forecasts how approximately
$35 billion will be spent over the
next 20 to 30 years to address transportation
needs.
MORPC Active Transportation and
Safety Program Manager Lauren Cardoni
said the Master Transportation Plan is
updated every four years and submitted to
the Ohio Department of Transportation
and the United States Department of
Transportation to evaluate transportation
infrastructure to see where investment is
needed.
“It is a long range plan, but there are
shorter time frames within it to meet more
immediate needs,” said Cardoni.
According to the plan, MORPC projects
that the population in central Ohio’s 15
counties will increase from approximately
2.4 million people to 3.1 million by 2050.
Accompanying this would be a 29 percent
increase in the number of households and
a 28 percent increase in the labor force
within the central Ohio area. This means
more traffic and the need for the transportation
infrastructure to accommodate it
all.
The following are some of the proposed
projects to be tackled in the coming years
within the Canal Winchester, Groveport,
and Obetz areas:
•Widening State Route 317 south of
Groveport Road.
•Widening Groveport Road west of
•Widening Winchester Pike.
•Extending Richardson Road north to
•Building a new road to connect the
Ebright Road.
•Constructing bike and pedestrian
trails, particularly along greenway areas of
local creeks, such as Walnut Creek and Big
Walnut Creek.
Cardoni said MORPC’s goals are to: create
sustainable neighborhoods; attract economic
opportunity; protect natural
resources; increase regional collaboration;
provide transportation options; and reduce
per capita energy consumption.
Public comments on the proposed projects
must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March
29. A complete draft of the 2024-2050 MTP
is available for review and comment at the
MTP webpage at www.morpc.org/mtp2050.
MORPC will host an open house regarding
the plan at its office at 111 Liberty Street,
Suite 100, Columbus, from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
on March 19. A formal presentation to
review the plan will take place at 5:30 p.m.
The final plan is expected to be adopted in
May 2024.
Groveport City Council reacts
Cardoni presented the information to
Groveport City Council at its Feb. 26 meeting
where Councilman Shawn Cleary said
he thinks the proposed Master
Transportation Plan is coming too late, citing
the growth of apartments in southeast
Franklin County as already increasing
traffic volume.
“The plan’s a day late and a dollar
short,” said Cleary. “The area is already
growing so fast. This plan seems too late.”
Councilman Jack Rupp added that U.S.
The giant things are on the move
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
The Groveport Police are working to stay on top of a
situation involving the movement of huge, heavy
equipment along Groveport area roads headed for
Licking County as part of the $20 billion Intel semiconductor
chip factory project.
According to the Ohio Department of
Transportation (ODOT), the first of nearly two dozen
extremely large truck loads, known as “super loads,”
were expected to journey from Manchester along the
Ohio River to Central Ohio as soon as March 6. Each
load will be transported by semi-truck via a predetermined
route to destinations in either New Albany or
Hebron. Most, but not all, of the loads are associated
with the future Intel semiconductor facilities. The
loads will not contain any hazardous material.
ODOT officials said some of the loads will weigh
900,000 pounds, be 19 feet wide, 24 feet high, and 270
feet long. Each oversized and overweight load will take
approximately 8-15 days to reach its destination.
While no official closures or detours are planned, slowrolling
road blocks will be necessary during transit,
and drivers should plan ahead for long delays along
the route.
Groveport Police Chief Casey Adams said representatives
from the Columbus Police Department and
ODOT provided him with the following information:
•Over a period of months, there are approximately
40 oversized transports that will come through
Groveport and Madison Township.
•Four of the oversized transports will be the largest
loads police have been anticipating coming through the
community, and will most likely cause some traffic
delays in Groveport (slower speeds and wider turns on
the roadways). The loads will be approximately 266 in
length, over 20 feet in height, and over 500,000 pounds
in weight
•The other 36 oversized loads will vary in size
(height, weights, and length). They will be smaller
compared to the four largest transports, and some of
these oversized loads can be transported on shorter
time frame compared to the four largest transports,
along with a different route - State Route 317 to U.S.
33 eastbound/ bypassing the Bixby Road route.
•Weekend only transports through Franklin
County.
•Transports will take place during daylight hours
only.
•Utility companies will be staging ahead of the
oversized transports to minimize traffic delays as the
trucks move through the designated routes.
Adams said the following Groveport area roads will
be affected by these oversized transports: Alum Creek
Drive (south of Rohr Road), Rohr Road, Opus Drive ,
Green Pointe Drive South, Saltzgaber Road, State
Route 317 (South Hamilton Road), Old Hamilton Road,
Bixby Road, Ebright Road, and U.S. 33 (heading east
towards Gender Road in Canal Winchester).
“When the city of Groveport and the Groveport
Police Department are made aware of these transports
MORPC
Continued from page 1
33 is already choked with traffic.
“Many of our traffic problems in the town of
Groveport are the result of U.S. 33 and I-270 not being
able to handle the traffic volume,” said Rupp. “We’ve
become an avoidance route for traffic in southeast
Franklin County.”
“We will work to provide as much notice as
possible so that drivers can plan ahead and
use alternate routes.”
- Jack Marchbanks
ODOT director
through ODOT media releases, I will make sure to
keep the community informed of this information in
the coming months,” said Adams.
Adams said the humongous equipment cannot be
transported on Interstate freeways because it will not
fit under overpasses, so local roads must be used.
ODOT officials stated they analyzed and planned
the route to make sure these super loads can be accommodated.
Since each load will be escorted by several
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, emergency traffic
will get around the rolling road block with minimal
delay. Working with partners like local governments
and utility companies, obstructions along the route
such as large overhead signs, traffic signals, and utility
lines have been adjusted and moved.
“For months, we have been working in coordination
with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and local stakeholders
along the route to ensure each move goes as
smoothly as possible with minimal impacts to those
who live and work in the communities along the route,”
said ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks. “We will work
to provide as much notice as possible so that drivers
can plan ahead and use alternate routes.”
The schedule of each of these loads will be checked
against local events, like festivals and fairs, to further
minimize impacts.
“Moving loads like these is not new for ODOT and
our various partners. However, what makes this situation
unique is the number of these types of loads
arriving in short succession,” said Mike Moreland,
administrator of ODOT’s Office of Special Hauling
Permits.
Notifications will be made in advance of each load
leaving the dock on the Ohio River near Manchester.
Updates will be provided as each load moves toward
central Ohio.
The route in central Ohio the loads will follow:
north on Rickenbacker Parkway North to Alum Creek
Drive; north on Alum Creek Drive to Rohr Road; east
on Rohr Road to Commerce Center Drive; north on
Commerce Center Drive to Green Pointe Drive South;
east on Green Pointe Drive South to Saltzgaber Road;
south on Saltzgaber Road to State Route 317; north in
the southbound lanes on State Route 317 past
Groveport to Bixby Road east; east on Bixby Road to
U.S. 33; east in the westbound lanes of U.S. 33 to the
Gender Road southbound to U.S. 33 westbound ramp
in Canal Winchester; travel the wrong way on the
Gender Road southbound to U.S. 33 westbound ramp;
take State Route 674/Gender Road north to Brice
Road; take Brice Road north to the intersection with
Tussing Road/State Route 204 in Columbus; east on
Tussing Road/State Route 204 east to State Route 310;
and north on State Route 310 to U.S. 40 in Etna.
Cardoni said that the widening of U.S. 33 is a top
priority for funding.
Council members also were not pleased with the
plan’s proposal of extending Richardson Road north to
Ebright Road because it would run the road through
Groveport Park.

School superintendent
gets new contract
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
The Groveport Madison Board of Education approved a new contract
for district Superintendent Jamie Grube in a split vote.
The board voted 3-2 to approve the contract with Board President
LaToya Dowdell-Burger, Board Vice President Seth Bower, and
board member Libby Gray voting for the contract while board members
Kathleen Walsh and John Kershner voted against the contract.
The board first amended Grube’s current contract, putting
changes into effect beginning Aug. 1, 2024 and ending Aug. 1, 2025.
The board then approved a five year contract to go into effect on Aug.
1, 2025 that will last until July 31, 2030.
Grube’s previous contract had a base salary of $175,000 with a
three percent increase each year. His current amended contract and
new five year contract lists an annual salary of $190,000 with a three
percent increase each contract year.
“Superintendent Grube’s raise places him in the bottom quarter
among the 16 school districts in Franklin County,” said Groveport
Madison Communications Director Kaitlin Duncan.
Other highlights of the superintendent’s contract include:
•An annual mileage allowance of $3,600 ($300 per month).
•The board will provide the superintendent with an annuity valued
at 13.5 percent of his base salary each year. The annuity will be
available upon his retirement.
•The superintendent will receive up to 30 vacation days and five
personal days as well as accumulate 1.25 days sick leave per month
of employment.
Grube first served as Groveport Madison deputy superintendent
from July 2018 until July 2022. He became interim superintendent
in July 2022 and in August 2022 he was named superintendent.
The champion Cruisers from a spring long ago
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Just imagine it. It’s a warm spring day
in 1910 and the Groveport Madison High
School baseball team trots on to a well
worn baseball field to warm up as they
await the arrival of the day’s opponents.
One could hear, echoing through time, the
pop of the ball caught in a weathered
leather glove as the players play pitch and
catch.
Most likely the opponent that day was
from a nearby school, such as Canal
Winchester, as it wasn’t as easy to quickly
travel around the county in those days as it
is today. The opposing team may have
arrived in Groveport on the Scioto Valley
Traction Line interurban railway and disembarked
at the depot on Blacklick Street
and walked the short distance over to the
ball diamond.
The Cruisers in those days played their
home games on a field at the former high
school grounds on College Street in
Groveport approximately where Naomi
Court is now.
Baseball had been played by Groveport
teams for many years by 1910, dating back
into the 1800s, and it was the first varsity
sport at the high school. Basketball and
football would soon follow in the early
1900s and become popular in their own
right. But in the early 20th century, baseball
was THE game in town.
And the 1910 Groveport Madison baseball
team was special.
There’s an old black and white photo
that shows 11 sharply dressed, serious
looking young men posed with a pennant
with a placard reading, “Champions of
Ohio, H.S.A.A., ‘10.” They are the members
of the Groveport Madison High School varsity
baseball team who, according to the
photo, won the state championship in 1910.
The players on the team were Lester
Petermann, Russell Wildermuth, Leo Kile,
Grover Peters, Clarence Wildermuth,
Joseph Zwayer, Dorwin Sims, Walter
Koebel, Ralph Rainier, Ray Nothstine, and
Warren Rarey. Lots of familiar local last
names on that list.
Sims would later graduate from Ohio
State University and return to Groveport
Madison in 1919 as a teacher and assistant
principal and then become principal in
1920 and superintendent of the school district
in 1924.
I assume the HSAA shown in the photo
denotes “High School Athletic Association,”
which might be a forerunner of today’s
Ohio High School Athletic Association
(OHSAA).
The Ohio High School Athletic
Association did not start its “official” state
high school baseball tournament until 1928
and therefore its records show nothing
before that year. In the early 20th century
high school athletics were most likely not
as prominent as they are now and information
about those early teams in all sports is
The Groveport Madison High School state baseball champions of 1910. (Photo
courtesy of the Groveport Heritage Museum.)
hard to come by.
I do not have many other details about
the 1910 Cruiser state championship baseball
team, but I like to imagine they were a
scrappy bunch who found time to play a
game they loved in between helping with
spring planting on nearby family farms or
assisting with family businesses and homesteads.
I wish I knew more about this team. If
anyone has more information on this fine
baseball team and its history, email me at
Arthritis and exercise
Exercise can be beneficial in the treatment
of arthritis, say many doctors.
Physical activity can reduce stiffness
and increase muscle strength and flexibility.
It also has overall health benefits, such
as improving cardiac fitness and physical
endurance. Three types of exercise are
most appropriate for those who have
arthritis:
•Strength training: Strong muscles help
support and protect joints affected by
arthritis. Lifting weights can provide this.
•Range of motion exercises: Dancing,
tai chi, Pilates, swimming, and other activities
that push the body to stretch and
move help maintain normal joint motion
and relieve stiffness.
•Aerobic activities: Activities such as
brisk walking, bicycle riding, skating and
more are good for the heart. They also moderate
weight, which in turn puts less strain
on joints, particularly the knees. Some
studies show that aerobic exercise can
reduce inflammation in some joints.
Before beginning an exercise program,
discuss with your doctor what activities
might be right for you.
Benefits of growing older
•Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of
youth give way as one ages, and older people
have less negativity and higher selfesteem.
Qualities like self-control and
altruism can contribute to happiness.
•Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to
discounts on meals, museum entry fees,
movies, and other entertainment if they’re
willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are
available through an array of venues if one
speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel
perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane
tickets and more.
•Reasoning and problem-solving skills:
Brain scans reveal that older adults are
more likely to use both hemispheres of
their brans simultaneously something
www.columbusmessenger.com
called bilateralization. This can sharpen
reasoning skills.
•Less stress: As people grow older, they
are able to differentiate their needs from
wants and focus on more important goals.
This can alleviate worry over things that
are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize
how little the opinions of others truly
mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling
less stress about what others think of
them.
Growing older may involve gray hair or
wrinkling skin, but there are many positive
things associated with aging.
Fun ways to stay active
Physical activity is an important component
of overall health. Health experts
advise that exercise can increase lean body
mass, prevent conditions like diabetes and
cardiovascular disease, improve balance,
and positively affect mental health/cognition.
Exercise also can foster socialization
with others, helping people overcome boredom
and isolation.
As individuals get older, they may not
be able to participate in all of the activities
they enjoyed as youths, but that doesn’t
mean older adults must resign themselves
to sedentary lifestyles. Explore these methods
for staying active.
Community senior center hikes, walking
tours, dances, and other activities all
serve as entertaining ways to get out and
about while meeting some fitness goals.
Raking leaves, mowing the lawn, digging
in flower beds, trimming bushes, and
other outdoor tasks could help a person
meet this quota in a way that doesn’t seem
like exercise at all.
Find hobbies that incorporate physical
activity. Perhaps learning to salsa dance or
taking Zumba will be fun? Pickleball has
caught on across the nation. The sport is a
mix of tennis, racquetball and badminton
that caters to all ages. Joining a bowling
team is another way to get active and meet
new people.
Franklin County Board of Commissioners:
Franklin County Board of Commissioners and The Franklin County Office on Aging join with the Messenger Newspaper in providing this update on aging issues in Franklin County.
Franklin County Office on Aging Supports
‘National Nutritional Month’
Through Support Services & Events
March is National Nutritional Month, a month dedicated to teaching individuals
how to make informed and healthy choices. This month-long campaign
strives to start healthy habits and make nutritious choices that last
all year long.
While healthy habits are important for everyone, they’re especially
important for seniors. Small actions in your everyday life can go a long
way to support healthy aging, and can benefit your physical, emotional,
and mental well-being.
It’s never too late to adapt healthy habits into your lifestyle. For many
older adults, good health ensures independence, security and productivity
as they age. There are many risk factors that can come from an unhealthy
lifestyle, including the increased risk of chronic conditions, fall risks and
behavioral health issues.
Some simple ways for seniors to live a healthy lifestyle include supporting
their physical health by staying active, eating healthy and getting plenty of
sleep. Taking care of your mental health is another important aspect in
maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which can be done by interacting with
friends and family, practicing gratitude and by participating in activities
you enjoy.
It’s important to remember that these habits should be incorporated all
year round, not just during the month of March. The Franklin County
Office on Aging (FCOA) offers numerous services and programs that
promote and support healthy aging among its senior residents such as
providing access to nutritious meals. FCOA offers free home-delivered
meals to any Franklin County resident aged 60 and older. These meals not
only help seniors maintain their independence but also support a healthy
and nutritious lifestyle. Many risks associated with aging can be
conquered through clean and healthy eating.
FCOA also supports a healthy lifestyle among its older adults by encouraging
them to participate in regular physical activity, which can help
improve and maintain a senior’s fitness, strength and balance. FCOA
hosts several physical fitness events throughout the year – providing
seniors a chance to learn from local wellness experts on how to incorporate
healthy fitness habits into their daily routine. One of FCOA’s
fitness-inspired events, Spring Forward, is taking place on Thursday, May
2 at the Whitehall Community Park YMCA from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This
free event will offer various community resources, educational sessions,
fitness activities and a produce giveaway for seniors in the Whitehall area.
While National Nutritional Month serves as a reminder to cultivate
healthy habits, the importance of sustaining healthy living goes far
beyond the month of March. FCOA's commitment to supporting seniors
underscores the value of prioritizing health and vitality in the aging community
– creating a lasting impact on their overall quality of life.
Decision coming on the
future of KidSpace
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
Another option has arisen
for the future use of
Groveport’s Crooked Alley
KidSpace
The city of Groveport’s 2024
budget includes $500,000 listed
under capital projects for
“KidSpace Building improvements.”
Last year’s city budget
included funds for the proposed
demolition of the 3,100 square
foot KidSpace building, located
at 630 Wirt Road, and replacing
it with additional public
parking at an estimated cost of
$500,000. But no action was taken last
year regarding the building.
At Groveport City Council’s Feb. 26
meeting, members of Robert Dutro
American Legion Post 486 asked city officials
to consider donating the KidSpace
building to their organization instead.
“We need a home base. We have not had
a permanent home,” said Robert Dutro
American Legion Post 486 Commander
Josh Saunders representing the 50 members
of the post, which currently meets at
the Madison Township Community
Center.
The post hopes to also use the building
for community space and space for satellite
offices for veterans assistance agencies.
According to members of the post, this
would make veterans assistance more
accessible to the over 850 veterans and
their families in the Groveport, Canal
Winchester and Madison Township areas.
Saunders said the post could have
repairs made to the building by obtaining
various grants.
“Taxpayers would not have to pay for
the repairs and it would give the building a
new lease on life,” said Saunders, who
added there would be no alcohol or gambling
on the premises.
Last year, Groveport City
Administrator B.J. King said the 69-yearold
KidSpace building needs repairs
including a new roof and the HVAC system
needs replaced.
“I wanted to salvage the building from
day one,” said Groveport Mayor Lance
Westcamp, who added the building’s fate is
up to Groveport City Council.
In a written report to council, King said
city administrators and council have been
looking for ways to address the parking
shortage in the city’s historic downtown.
“We are looking how best to maximize
the existing parking area,” said King.
In a past interview, King said several
downtown area businesses have expressed
a need for more public parking and the city
is looking at options. Currently the downtown
public parking lots south of Main
Messenger photo by Rick Palsgrove
The future of Crooked Alley KidSpace building, located
at 630 Wirt Road in Groveport, could be decided
soon.
Street are often full. Another downtown
public parking lot with about 99 spaces is
located on the north side of Main Street
near Ace Hardware and Delaney’s.
Council is considering two pieces of legislation
to address the situation. One
would authorize King to solicit bids and
contract for the re-alignment and expansion
of the existing municipal parking lot
situated along Wirt Road, Crooked Alley,
and Cherry Street.
“This expansion would increase the
parking capacity in the lot to approximately
100 spaces. There are currently a little
over 50 spots, inclusive of those in the
municipal lot and KidSpace,” said King. “If
approved, the plan associated with this
project would include the demolition of
KidSpace and the closure of a portion of
Cherry Street to combine these properties
with the existing municipal parking lot
property.”
The second ordinance would authorize
King to contract with Leukco Construction
for the buildout of the second floor of the
Rarey’s Port building on Main Street
(above Delaney’s Diner).
“That space is proposed to be used as
the new location of KidSpace activities as
well as conference room space,” said King.
Both pieces of legislation, as well Robert
Dutro American Legion Post 486’s request
that the city donate the building to them,
will be discussed by council at its committee
of the whole meeting on March 18 at
5:30 p.m. in the municipal building, 655
Blacklick St.
The KidSpace building was built in
1955 and was originally the Groveport
Municipal Building for many years and
later was home to the senior center.
KidSpace moved into the building in the
early 2000s after the senior center moved
to the Groveport Recreation Center.
The KidSpace building also includes
two public art works — a mural on an interior
wall depicting Groveport during the
19th century Ohio and Erie Canal era and
a Groveport Elementary School student art
project on an exterior wall.

Honoring Black History
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us not only reflect
on the past but also commit ourselves to building
a brighter future. As your State Senator, I am honored
to stand in solidarity with you during Black History
Month, a time dedicated to commemorating the resilience,
achievements, and cultural richness of the
Black community. This month serves as a poignant reminder
of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped
our nation. From the courageous leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement to the trailblazing innovators who
have revolutionized every facet of society, Black Americans
have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.
Their unwavering determination in the face
of adversity and their relentless pursuit of justice continue
to inspire us all.
However, Black History Month is not merely a time for
reflection; it is a call to action. At the community level,
there are countless ways to honor Black History Month
and contribute to its celebration. Here are a few suggestions:
Support Black-Owned Businesses.
Patronize Black-owned businesses in your community
and amplify their voices through social media and
word-of-mouth recommendations. By investing in the
economic success of Black entrepreneurs, we can promote
economic empowerment and foster a more equitable
society.
Attend public hearings and meetings where issues
affecting black communities are discussed.
These hearings provide an opportunity for community
members to voice their concerns, share their experiences,
and advocate for change directly to lawmakers
and policymakers. By showing up and speaking out,
you can ensure all voices and perspectives are heard
and considered in the decision-making process.
Engage directly with your elected officials.
Writing letters, making phone calls, and scheduling
meetings with local government officials and state legislators
are all powerful tools for advocacy. Building relationships
with your elected officials and holding us
accountable can help drive positive change from the
ground up.
Get involved with local organizations and advocacy
groups actively working to address issues facing
black communities.
These groups often have deep connections and relationships
with state government officials and can provide
valuable insights and support for your advocacy
efforts. By collaborating with problem solvers who are
dedicated to advancing black communities, you can
amplify your impact and contribute to meaningful
change in your community and beyond.
Together, let us strive to create a society where every
individual is valued, respected, and empowered to live
up to their fullest God-given potential. By honoring the
legacy of Black Americans, we can forge a more just and
unified future for generations to come.
feel unsafe around in private. The “Safe
Exchange Zone” gives individuals an area
where they are being recorded with video
surveillance cameras located on the police
department building, just in case something
should happen during the exchange
period between individuals.
This area is marked with a sign on the
southeast part of the building that has multiple
security cameras monitoring the parking
lot 24 hours a day.
There is also a Call Box located by the
front entrance doors. This call box will dial
a designated phone number inside the
police department when the button on the
box is pushed and, if an officer is not at the
police department during this initial call,
the call box will immediately send the call
to Franklin County Sheriff’s Department to
notify the police dispatchers of the need for
a Groveport Police officer at the police
department. Residents and visitors in the
city of Groveport should feel free to contact
the police department when the need arises,
(614) 525-3333.
Development resubmitted
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
A request for a zoning change regarding
the proposed construction of a 212,000
square foot cold storage facility in
Groveport that was recently withdrawn by
the applicant has reappeared before
Groveport City Council
The property, which is currently zoned
rural, is located on 18.6 acres on the north
side of Groveport Road just west of
Saltzgaber Road.
The proposed development also includes
a smaller parcel that could be marketed for
retail use.
A representative for the developers told
Groveport City Council last October that
the proposed development could be a $42
The broadcast coverage includes high
with the head coach, a detailed scouting
report of the opponent, the starting lineups,
and more.
After the game there are interviews
with players and the head coach, along
with a look at the final stats. The free
million investment in land and the facility.
He said the facility could bring 100 jobs to
the area and generate a possible $166,000
per year in income tax revenue for the city
of Groveport. He said the facility could
handle items such as food, pharmaceuticals,
cosmetics, and nutritional products. It
would use freon as its cooling agent.
At council’s Feb. 26 meeting, Groveport
resident Joellen Stebelton said she opposed
the proposed development.
“We have enough warehouses already
and we also have a goose problem from too
many retention ponds (from such developments),”
said Stebelton.
Council will consider the rezoning
request further at future meetings.
Gas and electric aggregation shows reduction in bills
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Madison Township residents enrolled in
a voter-approved aggregation program will
see a reduction in their utility bill–an
average of $16 a month–following action
taken by the township trustees at their
Feb. 26 meeting.
The trustees approved new rate resolutions
for electricity and gas starting with
April billing, which is before the current
agreement ends, due to favorable conditions.
“The market right now is in a pretty
good place to extend your agreement,” said
Trebel LLC representative Erin
Schmerschneider.
The township’s current participation
rate, based on eligibility, is 87 percent electric
and 89 percent gas. As in the past, only
those serviced by AEP or Columbia Gas are
eligible for the aggregation program.
Separate opt-out letters for the gas and
electric aggregation program participation
will be sent out on March 8 to all eligible
township residents, as required by the
PUCO. All opt-outs received by March 29
will be processed before the April billing.
However, residents may join or leave
the program at any time without penalty
from the supplier. Budget billing is also
available.
“This is about as low as we’ve seen since
COVID times,” said Madison Township
Administrator Susan Brobst.
Other Madison Township news
•Township trustees are asking for citizen
input as they consider a program with
SWACO to obtain new 65-gallon recycling
toters for residents in Madison Township
at no cost to residents through a grant program.
“The township will obtain the toters,”
said Brobst. “SWACO will help with getting
everything ordered and take care of
helping to distribute them.”
SWACO is also assisting with the costs
of a third-party vendor helping with the
rollout and education of the new program.
Residents who do not want to receive a
new toter can opt out. However, no recycled
items will be picked up on trash day without
the new recycle toter at the curb. The
existing green recycling bins will be discontinued.
Residents are asked to provide feedback
and comments no later than March 22. The
survey can be found under the Important
Information tab at www.madisontownship.org.
“SWACO is asking for a decision by the
March meeting,” said Brobst, who said over
400 green recycle bins are currently in use
by residents. “They have to have a minimum
order to make this work.”
•Public Works Superintendent Dave
Watkins said the township’s application for
street improvements through the Ohio
Public Works Commission received funding.
The County Engineer’s Office will assist
in the bid process for improving the following
streets: Glenfield, Bonita Place, Bixby
Road just west of Ebright, and intersection
improvements at Harbor and Tremaine
near Asbury Elementary School.
The board also approved a resolution to
participate in the county engineer’s 2024
resurfacing program. Specific streets will
be determined in the next two months.
