Making breakthrough plans
in export markets with Turquality support
Durak Tekstil increases its
turnover target by 30% in 2024
Achieving its turnover targets in 2023, a challenging year, Durak
Tekstil aims to grow by 30% in dollar basis in 2024. The company
will obtain the main part of the growth from foreign markets,
which it has focused on in recent years.
Durak Tekstil, a leading manufacturer
of industrial sewing
and embroidery threads,
managed to achieve its targets in
2023 under challenging production
and market conditions. Celebrating
its 50th anniversary, the company
has been making successful strategic
moves regarding exports in
recent years with the strength of its
solid position in the domestic market.
Durak Tekstil, exporting to more
than 77 countries, aims to increase
its turnover by 30% in dollar basis
in 2024, with the main share coming
from sales to foreign markets.
In 2022, the company increased its
global activities and power with the
Turquality certificate it received and
has focused on expanding its brand
awareness globally with its special
R&D solutions.
Stating that in 2023, macroeconomic
indicators (parameters) were
quite challenging, Chairman of the
Board of Directors of Durak Tekstil
Hüseyin Kuru noted that despite
these unfavourable conditions, they
achieved the budget targets they
set at the beginning of the year.
Kuru informed that they achieved a
growth in turnover in line with expectations
compared to the previous
year, making the following remarks
about the year; “In general, election
years are periods of uncertainty.
There was an uncertainty due to the
elections to be held in the first half
of 2023. Furthermore, the effects of
the earthquakes affecting 11 of our
cities and causing a great loss of life
and property were felt in all sectors.
During all these processes, there
were serious increases in production
costs. The Turkish textile sector has
suffered a serious loss in exports
in recent years, and unfortunately,
our loss of momentum as a country
continued at the point of competing
in the foreign market in 2023. With
the determination of a new economic
policy and the emergence of short
and medium-term plans, we believe
that a more positive process will
begin within a few months.”
Kuru pointed out that the wide customer
network they have achieved
with the brand power that comes
from quality production provides
them with an advantage in these
challenging market conditions and
disclosed; “Durak Tekstil has tens
of kinds of sewing and embroidery
threads that appeal to many different
sectors. Since we do not confine
ourselves to a single field we are
able to tolerate any decline in one
field with sales in other fields. We
offer our high quality, technically
specialised and sustainable products
to manufacturers with the best
service. In this way, we reached
more than ten thousand customers
in both domestic and foreign markets
18 SleepTech • March - April
throughout the year. By emphasising
its brand and quality differentiation
in industrial thread, Durak Tekstil has
become a more demanded partner
in the market. In the long term, this
development is more important than
periodic sales figures. After all, we
grew against all odds in 2023, and
the real figures we have achieved
draw us a very optimistic outlook for
2024.”
2024 target is to increase
turnover mainly abroad
Remarking that 2023 turnover was
realised in parallel with expectations,
Hüseyin Kuru emphasised that they
are targeting 30% growth in dollar
basis in 2024. He indicated that the
domestic market has a 10% share in
this growth and that the main growth
will be experienced in international
sales.
Kuru stated that Durak Tekstil is a
company that makes sales to 77
countries as of today, highlighting
that they have reached all 5 continents
in exports mainly in Central
and Eastern Europe and North America.
Reminding that in 2022 they
were accepted to the Turquality programme,
Kuru said; “Being the first in
our sector to be included in Turquality,
which provides support to Turkish
companies in foreign markets and
whose participation depends on very
challenging conditions, will turn into
an important advantage for us. The
Turquality programme encourages us
to establish dominance in these markets
by digging deeper.” He informed
that they have placed many activities
and investment programmes in the
budget agenda in 5 different country
markets determined within the scope
of this programme adding that they
aim to place Durak Tekstil among the
world’s top 5 big brands in its field
for the medium term.
10% of employees are employed
in R&D
Hüseyin Kuru stated that Durak
Tekstil carries out activities that go
beyond being a standard sewing and
embroidery thread manufacturer and
constantly expands its markets with
innovative products as a result of intensive
R&D activities. Saying; “R&D
is our driving force”, Kuru continued
his words as follows; “We allocate
7% of our profit to R&D activities every
year. Our in-house R&D department
consists of expert engineers
and interdisciplinary experts. When I
say that 10 percent of our total employment
consists of R&D employees,
I think we will have shown how
much importance we attach to this
issue. Therefore, I can say that we
are the locomotive company in our
sector in terms of product development.”
He remarked that they carry
out joint studies with both the sector
and universities for R&D studies,
stating that innovations that appeal
to technical specifications and
special usage areas will be launched
in 2024. Pointing out; “Durak is in
every aspect of life”, Kuru added that
among the new products they will introduce
to the market this year, there
will be an innovation that will facilitate
the care of the elderly and the sick.
Indicating that Durak Tekstil focuses
on sustainability as much as
developing innovative products, he
explained that they have transformed
this concept into a part of their
corporate identity with an end-to-end
concept as follows; “Sustainability
is of fundamental importance for us
as a concept that constitutes the
dynamism of the supply chain. This
process, starting from the sources
of raw materials, covers a traffic that
goes all the way from the finished
product to the customer and even to
after-sales service. We meet the criteria
for ecological sustainability and
recycling, as well as implementing
our plans for financial sustainability.
Our durability, capital structure, financial
strength and customer profile
determine our basis regarding competition.
To conclude, Durak Tekstil
as a financially sustainable company
adds more value to its stakeholders
both with its production processes
and products.”
IKMIB Chairman Adil Pelister:
“The Türkiye Green Industry Project
will make a great contribution to the
green transformation of our SMEs”
Pelister noted: “I wish that
the “Türkiye Green Industry
Project”, which is implemented
under the coordination
of the Ministry of Industry and
Technology and with the financial
support of the World Bank
through KOSGEB and TÜBİTAK,
will be auspicious for our country,
our business world and our
sector. Within the scope of our
country’s 2053 Net Zero Emission
vision and our chemical sector’s
2030 vision of sustainability, I
find this project, which supports
the activities to prepare for green
transformation, very important
and I wish our sector, which is
mostly composed of SMEs, will
be able to benefit from this valuable
support.
Minister Çavuşoğlu announced
that they will support the efficient
green transformation of industrialists,
entrepreneurs and SMEs
with the “Turkey Green Industry
Project” and that the project,
which has a budget of 450 million
dollars, will be carried out under
the coordination of the Ministry
of Industry and Technology in
cooperation with KOSGEB and
TÜBİTAK.
With the KOSGEB Green Industry
Support Program that has
entered into force, SMEs will be
supported up to 14 million Turkish
Liras for the installation of solar
energy systems within their own
structure; green transformation
projects for energy, water and
raw material efficiency, sustainable
and climate-resilient waste
recycling will be supported up to
4 million Turkish Liras; companies
engaged in R&D and innovation
activities for green production,
higher energy and resource
efficiency and private sector-led
collaborations will be provided
with TÜBİTAK support.
We see that the “Green Growth
Technology Roadmap” focuses on
6 sectors. Among the 6 sectors, it
is pleasing to see that our chemicals,
plastics and fertilizer sectors
are prioritized and will be able to
apply to the project. Since the
chemicals sector is a strategic
sector that provides input to 27
other sectors, its prioritization and
taking action for green transformation
with these supports will
positively affect all sectors.
“Now is the time to take action
for our future, for sustainable
growth and a strong Türkiye”
As IKMIB, we have identified sustainability
as a focal point in line
with our 2030 vision. In this context,
we work on green transformation,
circular economy and digital
transformation. Transformation
projects require high costs and
capital. In this sense, it is of great
importance that our companies
are supported by our government.
Now is the time to take action for
our future, for sustainable growth
and a strong Türkiye.
We recommend that our companies
apply for the projects
called for under the Green Industry
Project as Green Innovation
Technology Mentoring Call, Green
Transformation in Industry Call,
R&D and Innovation Networks for
Industry (SAYEM) Green Transformation
Call and benefit from these
supports.
As the chemicals sector, the driving
force of exports, which makes
the greatest contribution to the
development and economy of our
country, we will continue to work
with all our strength to achieve
our goals and break new records
in Türkiye’s second century.”
Latest technology in
textile; nanotextile
In this article, we will examine nanotechnology, which is used in textile
production as in every technological field and offered to people. But first
of all, it would be more useful to go down to the etymological origin of
this technology and give information about it. The meaning of the word
nano is one billionth of a unit, which comes from the word Nanos. Nano
is an invisible technology made with atoms, which are the building
blocks of matter, and the textile industry has become an important
application area in terms of nano technology. The use of nanotechnology
in the textile industry today has revolutionized the field of textiles as well
as in every other field. Nano, which is basically a unit of measurement,
refers to technological studies developed in dimensions that cannot be
seen with the naked eye.
After nanotechnology entered
the field of textile, it
is seen that many different
studies have been carried out in
this field. The products defined
as nanomaterials and preferred
in this field can be one, two and
three dimensional. Generally
one-dimensional ones can be
used on extremely thin surface
films and coatings. The biggest
advantage of the use of nanotechnology
in the textile industry
has been the development of
fabrics with antibacterial properties.
Nanotechnology clothes
developed by using this technology
in the health sector have
started to be used in daily life today.
By producing such as PES,
PES - Cotton and PES - Viscose,
one side is called PES and the
other side is cotton, providing
both compatible fabrics that do
not harm the human body and
features that do not contain
bacteria.
THE USE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
IN HOME TEXTILE IS EXPANDING
It is possible to talk about the
new generation nanotechnology
home textile product that protects
the human body against external
factors, as well as fabrics
developed with nanotechnology
that do not stain and do not contain
bacteria. The most common
use of nanotechnology in the
field of textiles in the commercial
sense is to add elements such
as liquid repellency and stain
and bacteria repellent properties
to fabrics and clothes by using
various nano particles.
Thanks to its hydrophobic surface
production, it ensures that
the water droplets of the clothes
flow over the surface and do
not take up place on the textile
product. This type of products
which have become widespread
recently, has started to become
common thanks to its self-cleaning
ability. In these nanotechnology
products preferred in clothing
and home textiles:
Micro-capsules having stretch
features, products that are
resistant to UV rays and do not
change color, micro-capsules
that fight against bad odors, etc.
It is seen that nano materials with
different properties are used. In
addition to these, it is seen that
nanotechnology applications are
becoming widespread in many
products in home textile and
textile sector.
The era of smart clothing can
begin
Thanks to nanotechnology, an
era has begun in which clothes
are getting smarter. There are
many advantages of making a
fabric or clothing smart. Especially
in the defense industry, smart
fabrics can make an instant
report or determine the direction
of the danger, for example, by
transmitting the health status of
a wounded soldier to the center.
In the ready-to-wear and textile
sector, the production of smart
clothes using nanotechnology,
the production of textile products
connected to the Internet and
their interaction, apart from their
wrinkle, waterproof and antibacterial
properties, paved the
way for the development of such
products in daily life. In the near
future, the use of textile products
developed with nanotechnology,
which interact with the environment
and offer solutions that protect
the person against external
factors and make life easier, will
begin to become widespread.
The advantages of nanotechnology
in smart fabrics and textiles,
the use of nanotechnology in the
apparel and textile sector provides
many advantages. A number
of basic features of fabrics
in the known general sense are
carried one step further thanks
to this technology, enabling the
development of products that will
gain a much more widespread
use in the future. Thanks to the
use of nanotechnology fabrics in
the clothing industry:
Self-cleaning fabrics, Anti-wrinkling,
Antibacterial, can treat
wounds and protect against
external factors, control body
functions, etc.
It is possible to talk about many
different elements among the
advantages of ready-made
clothing products produced with
fabrics with basic properties.
On the other hand, experiencing
color change with heat, light and
different interactions or giving
warnings by controlling the body
functions of the person in terms
of health, pulse, blood pressure,
temperature, etc. has revealed
that nanotechnology will also be
determinant in the fashion of the
future.
HOW ARE NANOTECHNOLOGY
FABRICS MANUFACTURED?
Adding chemical substances
to the fiber structure, by using
different techniques in order to
give various properties to textile
products can be defined as the
first stage of the development
of nanotechnology products. It
is also seen that methods such
as adding the said chemicals to
the synthetic fiber structure and
adding them to the fabric surface
during finishing processes
are preferred. Coating the fabric
surface with nanofiber polymer
solution is also among the methods
used in the development of
nanotechnology textile products.
Home textile products caring
skin
Nanotechnology is a product
that is mostly used in the field of
health today. The use of vitamin-based
nano capsules, which
is especially preferred in skin
care, in clothes provides skin
care. The support of the vitamins
A, C and E in these capsules and
their protection against toxins are
among the factors that show the
importance of the use of nanotechnology
in the field of textiles.
Another method used in the
production of nanotechnology
fabrics is nanofiber coating. It is a
method of improving the surface
structure of the existing fabric
by coating it with nanofibers to
improve and develop its existing
properties. It can be used to
increase the usability of the fabric
in different areas. Thanks to this
method, the electrospin method
generally enables the development
of fabrics with antibacterial
properties.
Brand new solutions making life
easier
Nanotechnology textile products,
developed by the joint use
of microcapsules that produce
fragrance (lavender, lily, etc.) and
vitamin-based microcapsules,
are among the technologies of
the future that have the capacity
to radically change our lives.
Nanotechnology, which is used
in many different fields, especially
in textiles, is among the technologies
that will carry humanity to
the future, thanks to its brand
new solutions that make life easier
and because it is too small to
be seen with the naked eye.
CURRENT USAGE AREAS OF
NANOTECHNOLOGY TEXTILE
recent years, thanks to the use of
nanotechnology and the development
of application methods
in this field, the use of nanotechnology
on daily clothes is also
seen. In addition to home textile
products, it is also possible to
talk about the use of masks with
nanotechnology in the production
of protective masks against
viruses today.
Today, the main usage areas of
textile products manufactured
with nanotechnology are:
It can be listed as Marine clothing
(swimsuits and beach towels),
Home and vehicle textiles, Sports
products, Construction and
agriculture sector, Health and
medical textile products, etc.
The most special products that
will change the understanding
of decorative and clothing that
are suitable for use not only for
professions but also for daily
life have begun to be developed
using nanotechnology.
Antibacterial fabric production
is possible
Nanotechnology fabrics, which
do not contain bacteria on the
surface of the fabric and manage
to fight bacteria on the surface
on which they are coated, have
an important place in the fight
and protection of epidemic
diseases that have increased
recently. For example, carpets
developed using nanotechnology
in home textiles, ensure the
rapid destruction of living bacteria,
thanks to the coating of the
surface layer with special nanomaterials.
Similarly, antibacterial
socks, which are also used in the
defense industry and developed
for special purposes, protect the
feet of people against fungi or
different types of bacteria and
prevent bad odors.
The use of clothes and masks
with antibacterial properties to
protect the health of healthcare
workers contributes to both the
protection of body health and
the prevention of the continued
existence of viruses and bacteria
on their clothes.
The usage area of antibacterial
fabrics developed using nanotechnology
has started to become
widespread day by day.

ISPA announces
retirement of President
Ryan Trainer
Alexandria, VA – The
International Sleep
Products Association
(ISPA), the trade association
representing mattress manufacturers
and component
suppliers, has announced
the upcoming retirement of
Ryan Trainer, president of
both ISPA and the Mattress
Recycling Council (MRC).
He will retire after 22 years
of dedicated service to the
association and the industry.
Prior to becoming president
in 2010, Trainer served
as ISPA’s general counsel.
“Having worked closely with
Ryan for many years, I have
come to value his insights,
dedication, and the positive
impact he has had on our
industry,” said Hank Little,
chair of the ISPA Board of
Trustees and former president
of Atlanta Attachment
Co. “He leaves behind a legacy
of contributions that have significantly
improved our organization
and the industry as a whole. The
Board wishes him a fulfilling retirement
and expresses gratitude
for his valuable service.”
Little has appointed a search
committee composed of current
and past members of the ISPA
and MRC Boards that will work
with an outside firm to identify
qualified candidates to replace
Trainer.
That committee intends to begin
interviewing applicants for this
position shortly after ISPA EXPO
2024 ends in March. The association
is committed to a seamless
transition as it selects a new
president who will lead ISPA
and MRC into their next
chapters and continue to
advance the association’s
role as the Voice of the Mattress
Industry®.
In his years at ISPA’s helm,
Trainer has guided the
industry through major
regulatory and legislative
challenges and was instrumental
in launching the
MRC.
“Serving this wonderful industry
and working with the
great ISPA and MRC teams
has been the highlight of my
career,” Trainer said. “Our
members create innovative
products that both benefit
consumers and improve
their companies’ environmental
performance. I have
had the privilege to work
with some fantastic individuals
and organizations to protect
and advance the sleep products
industry. I thank the ISPA and
MRC Boards, our members, and
the ISPA/MRC staff for their support.
I am proud of what we have
accomplished together and confident
that these organizations will
thrive under new leadership.”
Elektroteks aims high
The leading mattress machinery company plans growing in the
production of foam plants as well. Osman Güler, Chairman of
the Board of Directors of Elektroteks, said that they are focusing
on growing in foam production facilities as well as the mattress
production line in which they have been specialized for years.
Elektroteks, which is involved
in most of the
mattress production
facilities in the world, is rapidly
progressing towards becoming
a global player in the production
of foam factories. Elektroteks,
which establishes industry 4.0
turnkey factories by taking a
close interest in all processes
from the architecture of a factory
to the production stage,
focused on growth in the field of
foam. Elektroteks, which manages
all turnkey processes of
foam production factories from
architectural design to machine
installation, is in competition with
world giants in this field in the
global arena. Stating that they
will increase the share of foam
factories in turnover to over 30
per cent, Osman Güler, Chairman
of the Board of Directors of Elektroteks,
said that they will grow
by deepening in this field where
they are a global player. Stating
that they have established fully
automated industry 4.0 factories
in mattress and foam production,
Güler emphasised that they
produce high technology in terms
of added value. Explaining that
they also make electronic components
and software in-house,
Osman Güler pointed out that
they stand out in global competition
in this way. Noting that
they are among the companies
that lead the world in mattress
technologies, Güler said that as
an integrated facility, they are
62 SleepTech • March - April
involved in most of the mattress
production facilities in the world.
Stating that they manufacture with
350 people in a total closed area
of 55 thousand square metres in
Kayapa OSB and Görükle Industrial
Zone in Bursa, Osman Güler
said that they export 95 per cent
of their industry 4.0 mattress and
foam production machinery and
plant production to more than
130 countries. Osman Güler,
who underlined that investments
to increase capacity continue
continuously, stated that they
have companies in the USA, India
and Bulgaria as well as Bursa,
and that they provide service with
nearly 50 employees in these
countries.
“It attracts attention at
international fairs”
Osman Güler, who noted that they
carry out all the processes they
need such as machining, robotic
welding, paint shop, pipe processing,
sandblasting, assembly,
said, “With the capacity increase,
we decided to produce machinery
for different sectors and we chose
the foam production sector, which
is close to the mattress sector
and even has many common customers.
Except for foam casting,
we can gradually produce all machinery
such as storage, cutting,
gluing, shaping and packaging.
We have completed many production
models related to these,
and our R&D studies in this field
continue. We believe that we will
become a worldwide brand and
a leading company in the field of
foam as in the mattress sector.
In this context, we created the
perception that ‘we are also in
Europe’ in the foam sector at the
Interzum Fair we recently attended.”
Pointing out that energy is
an important cost item in production,
Osman Güler said that they
completed and commissioned the
1600-kilowatt Roof SPP investment
in this context.
“We make 42 per cent of our
exports to America”
Stating that the USA, the world’s
largest mattress consumer, is the
biggest market of Eleketroteks,
Güler said, “We make around
42% of our production to this
country, we have a large part of
the market share here. In order to
provide closer and faster service
to the manufacturers of the
sector, we have an establishment
in the USA in order to provide assembly,
service and spare parts
services. We attach great importance
to this region. Considering
these, we had to prepare very
well for the ISPA fair and that
is what we did. We will almost
establish a mattress production
facility with a machine park of 8
containers in the fair area. In addition
to the mattress machines,
we will also show our strength in
foam machines as I mentioned in
the top lines.”
“We aim to make Turkiye the
center of the global mattress
industry”
Osman Güler, who is also the
President of the International
Mattress Industry Association
(IBIA), reminded that they
brought the mattress sub-industry
sector together in Istanbul under
the roof of IBIA EXPO 2023 in
September last year. Güler said
that they aim to make Turkiye a
trade center for mattress manufacturers
with its geopolitical location,
visa and travel facilities as
well as innovative and technological
products. Osman Güler also
announced that they will organize
a fair in Warsaw, Poland between
12-14 May this year, in which
TÜYAP, 4 sector associations,
40 IBIA members and nearly 200
companies will take part.
Aydın Tekstil aims to reach the
top in quality
Berhan Kaya, Marketing Manager of Aydın Tekstil, stated that
they want to be the number 1 of quality in the US market with the
performance at ISPA Expo fair.
Berhan Kaya, who used
the expression “we want
to follow the trends and
technological developments on
the spot” while explaining their
expectations from ISPA Expo,
said that they want to be at the
top by always staying up-to-date.
He stated that growth only in
terms of volume is a short-term
success and in order to achieve
success in the long term, it is
necessary to play at the top
without sacrificing quality. Touching
on sustainability and natural
life issues in his interview, Kaya
said, “We pay attention to include
more sustainable products in
our production in order to leave
a more livable world for future
generations.”
What are your expectations from
ISPA exhibition?
ISPA exhibition has a lot of potential
for the North and South
America regions, has been
successfully organized for years
and is popular with our existing /
potential customers, so it is important
to be present at this exhibition.
Our expectation from this
fair, which offers the opportunity
to meet with industry leaders,
innovators and potential business
partners on an international
platform, is to promote Aydın
Tekstil’s products and services,
establish new business contacts
and follow the latest trends and
technological developments in
the sector. In addition, it is also
an important goal to strengthen
our relationships with our existing
customers through face-to-face
meetings and to receive their
feedback.
How important is the American
market for you? Could you tell
us about your activities for this
market?
The American market is one of
66 SleepTech • March - April
our target markets of strategic
importance for Aydın Tekstil. In
addition to its great potential, this
market draws attention with its demand
for innovative products and
high-quality products and services.
As a company, we continue our
intensive efforts for the American
market. In this context, we continue
to increase our co-operation with
the leading “key-player” companies
in the sector, especially in the USA.
As Aydın Tekstil, our goal is to be at
the top in terms of product and service
quality rather than volume. Because
as you know, big companies
make long-term goals and being at
the top in quality and staying there
is a long-term goal and success.
Could you tell us about the
products you will exhibit at the
fair?
Our work on R&D studies, innovation,
manufacturer and end-user
targeted product development
continues to increase day by day.
While we closely follow today’s
trends, we also work on setting
trends for the future. In order to
leave a more livable world for
future generations, we pay attention
to include more sustainable
products in our production. In
addition, the importance of value-added
product exports for our
country’s economy is increasing
every day. We continue our work
in this context. At the ISPA fair,
we will make a presentation of the
products mentioned above with
patterns and colors that will attract
the attention of our visitors.
Mattregate: By 2024 we aim to
double the number of customers
in the American market
In an interview before the ISPA Expo, Mr Tayyip Tanrıöven, CEO
of Mattregate, said that they have high expectations from the
exhibition and that they aim to double the number of customers
in the American market by the end of 2024.
Stating that the American
market is always dynamic
and open to continuous
development, Mr. Tayyip Tanrıöven
said that they are working
to open a warehouse in
this region and that they aim to
provide faster service. Stating
that they see ISPA Expo as an
important organisation to reach
Mattregate’s short, medium and
long term targets, Mr. Tanrıöven
described the presence of Turkish
companies in the fair as an
important step for the Turkish
mattress industry.
What are your expectations from
ISPA fair?
First of all, our company completed
the year 2023 by reaching
the targeted growth rate and
closed the year 2023 by planning
new machinery and production-efficiency
innovation investments.
Although the bottleneck
that may be caused by factors
such as container transport and
global demand uncertainties in
2024 is observed by everyone,
the most important goal for
Mattregate is to minimise such
problems and grow at least 30%
compared to 2023. In 2023, our
company, which completed the
year by regularly exporting to
approximately 30 countries, aims
to increase this number to at
least 40 countries in 2024. In this
context, it will be a great oppor-
70 SleepTech • March - April
tunity for us to meet face to face
with our customers and potential
customers in the USA and South
America region, which is already
one of our main markets, to
exhibit and explain our products
produced by our state-of-the-art
fully automatic machines to our
visitors face to face.
We are preparing for the fair in
the best way possible with the
intensive work of our production
and innovation engineers, as well
as the necessary researches of
our sales & marketing department.
In addition, when we examine
the exhibition plan, the fact that
the vast majority of companies in
the mattress and mattress spring
sector are from Turkey is also
pleasing for the increase of our
country’s export rates and the
development of our sector.
As I mentioned above, we have
high expectations from the ISPA
fair and I consider the fair as an
important organisation that will
bring us one step closer to our
short and long term goals and I
wish success to all the companies
that will participate in the
fair.
How important is the American
market for you? Could you tell
us about your activities for this
market?
The American market is one of
the biggest markets of our company,
but in my opinion, there is
no limit to developing business
in that region because the region
has a great potential and dynamism.
Based on the information we
have obtained from the companies
we work with and our
meetings during our visits, our
company has been working intensively
on issues such as what
the American market and the
manufacturer-trader expect from
us, what kind of service they
want, etc. and still continues.
In parallel with this, both machinery
investments and studies,
product packaging, investments
and studies have been made,
and innovation studies continue
to be carried out.
In addition, we started the activities
of opening warehouses in
both east and west in America
in the last quarter of 2023 and
we have completed one of them,
and our work for the other is in
full swing, so we plan and aim
to provide faster service to our
customers in the region.
Our goal is to at least double the
number of our current customers
in the relevant market in 2024,
and our intensive work in this
context continues.
the global industry
Form Sünger Export and Marketing Chief Volkan Yılmaz said in
an interview before ISPA Expo that they wanted to expand their
commercial volume in the American market.
Volkan Yılmaz stated that
they will showcase the
sponges they make for the
American market at ISPA Expo
2024 as more innovative products
other than standard production,
and that they will be at
the fair with medical mattresses.
Stating that they closely follow
the American market and that
they will reflect Form Sünger
quality and product diversity at
ISPA Expo, Yılmaz underlined
that they will serve visitors not
added that they are planning to
increase the current commercial
volume of Form Sünger in the
American market, and stated that
they see ISPA Expo as a step
towards this goal.
What are your expectations from
ISPA exhibition?
Organized every 2 years, ISPA is
a global exhibition that brings together
many customers from the
North and South America region.
It is important for our company
to have our current and potential
customers together, rather than
88 SleepTech • March - April
customer visits that can be made
due to the fact that the region
is far from Turkiye and is a very
large geography. Our expectation
from the fair is to increase our
volume worldwide and specifically
in America by presenting
the product range and product
quality that we have developed
with our sustainable investments,
R&D and P&D studies to our existing
and new customers in the
market in order to maintain and
strengthen our existing position
in the market in a globally macro
competitive environment.
How important is the American
market for you? Could you tell
us about your activities for this
market?
As it is known, the largest import
and export transactions in the
world are carried out through the
United States of America. We are
also aware that the sponge and
related products in our own production
area have a high volume
in the American market. As a
company that closely follows this
market, we know that especially
large and high-quality mattress
manufacturers are located and
operating in America. We know
that this country, which develops
its industry with technological
investments day by day, is always
a target market for us.
We provide innovative product
development rather than our
standard productions to companies
operating in the American
market. Although our main production
area is sponge, we know
that sponge mattress is popular
in the American market. Due to
the anti-dumping in the finished
mattress, we make product shipment
to our customers by gluing
the sponge layers.
Could you tell us about the
features of the products you will
exhibit at the fair?
As Form Sponge, our main production
is polyurethane sponge.
It can be used in many sectors
such as mattress, furniture, insulation,
underwear. Our company,
which has a wide range of products,
has soft, standard, hard,
memory and innovative sponges.
In addition to these, we also
brought our cast pillow models
and topper products with us. We
can provide our customers with a
final finished bed, called bed and
box, as well as a display bed that
we can ship only by combining
the sponge layers they want. We
also have beds that can be used
in the United Nations tenders
held around the world and our
medical bed sample used in
hospitals.
How important is the American
market for you? Can you tell
us about your activities for this
market?
The American market can be
expressed as the mega market
of the mattress industry. Mattress
companies that make large
investments and have large
production volumes are mostly
in this region. For this reason, as
Comfytex, it is a market that we
want to expand and gain a place.
In order to dominate the dynamics
of the region and meet the
expectations, it is our priority to
continue our work with a regional
deepening strategy and to
provide quality and fast service to
the industry leaders in the American
region as in every region.
Can you tell us about the
features of the products you will
One of the main ways to improve
sleep quality is the air quality of
the sleeping environment. The
second issue is how comfortable
the person feels in the bed.
Our task is to take precautions
and produce solutions for any
discomfort that may arise during
sleep (sweating, non-skin-friendly
products, non-breathable fabrics)
Apart from our
launch product, our
main innovative
products, Oxycore,
Biosalt and
Medicare brands are
patented and belong
to our unique
series and our
basic principle is to
offer comfortable
solutions that
improve sleep
quality.
and to add value to this comfort
with innovative products.
We aim to make a mark at the
ISPA fair with our launch product
Tesla, which we have prepared
for this purpose.
renewed feeling by getting rid of
the negative electricity we attract
in our daily lives. Tesla Technology
generates a magnetic field
in the bed that is compatible
with the body’s natural magnetic
field. This field supports biological
healing by increasing cellular
oxygen levels during sleep. The
magnetic effect developed by this
technology applied to the mattress
fabric accelerates regional
blood circulation, stimulates the
immune system and contributes
to body regeneration.
Apart from our launch product,
our main innovative products,
Oxycore, Biosalt and Medicare
brands are patented and belong
to our unique series and our
basic principle is to offer comfortable
solutions that improve sleep
quality. Biosalt is a technology
inspired by the benefits of rock
salt and increases the air quality
of the environment during sleep
thanks to the negative ions it
emits, as if we were sleeping by
a river or in a forest, allowing us
to wake up more energized for
the new day.
We would be happy to welcome
our visitors at booth #1457 at
ISPA fair to learn more about
our brand and to examine our
innovative products and trendy
pattern collections. You can visit
Profile
Milkay: We will continue to add
value to our company and
our sector
Milkay General Manager Abdullah Nursaçan said in an interview
on Milkay’s 2024 vision that the US and Latin American markets
are among their target markets.
Stating that they keep pace
with this development
in every sense as one of
the representatives of the ever-changing
and developing global
mattress industry in Turkiye
and that they act with the vision
of being the pioneer of the sector
in Turkiye, Nursaçan stated that
they will continue their innovation
and R&D activities without slowing
down in 2024. Underlining
that they aim to enter the US and
Latin American markets this year
and to be permanent in these
markets, Mr. Abdullah Nursaçan
added that they will accelerate
their advertising and public
relations activities in order to
reinforce the Milkay perception in
the global industry and increase
brand awareness.
Could you tell us about the R&D
studies and innovation changes
you will make in your products
in 2024?
We can define the mattress
industry as a dynamic sector
that renews itself day by day.
Of course, we keep up with this
development, and we can even
say that we have been pioneers
many times. Felt has an important
position in mattress and
we are aware of this and develop
new products to maximize
comfort. Especially our Milform
product has attracted serious
attention both in the domestic
and foreign markets and our volume
is increasing day by day in
these products, and hopefully our
product R&D studies will continue
in 2024.
Innovation focuses on both technical
and market side. R&D, on
the other hand, focuses only on
the technical side of these works.
110 SleepTech • March - April
We will continue to add value to
our company and therefore to
our sector in 2024 in both market
and technical terms.
In 2024, in which fairs will you
take part as an exhibitor at
home and abroad?
In 2024, we have Poland international
fair and IBIA Expo - Istanbul
fair, which are currently finalized.
Every quarter of the year,
we evaluate the fair calendar by
analyzing the benefits.
Are there any new markets you
plan to enter abroad? Which
ones?
Of course, let’s talk about the
markets we aim to increase our
volume rather than the ones we
plan to enter. Because we have
made and continue to make
active sales in many countries
of the world in different years.
However, as everyone knows,
the world has experienced and
continues to experience a global
logistics crisis. We want to be
on every continent in order to
be minimally affected by such
regional events. We can say that
especially the USA and Latin
America are among our target
markets for 2024.
What kind of a path do you
plan to follow in the field of
advertising, marketing and
public relations in the new year?
Advertising and promotional activities
are very important for us
in order to provide brand awareness,
especially in the global
market, and to reinforce the
Milkay perception in the minds of
customers.
For companies like us who do
B2B marketing / sales, advertising,
marketing and public relations
are important to develop
awareness, stimulate sales, facilitate
communication, and generate
a relationship between our
organization and brand and the
consumer. For this reason, we
will continue to organize international
fairs and market research
trips. In addition to these, we
will also carry out social media
marketing activities on social
media, which has become almost
indispensable in life.
How do you position Milkay
in the Turkish mattress subindustry
industry?
Turkiye is really in an important
position in the world in the
mattress industry. When we look
at the exhibitor profile of any
mattress supplier industry fair,
we see up to 60-70% Turkish exhibitors.
This is actually a proud
situation for Turkiye and we
believe that this rate will increase
gradually. As Milkay, we are one
of the locomotive companies in
the mattress supplier industry.
With nearly 30 years of experience
in the sector and export
experience, we are a company
that has managed to become the
first name that comes to mind
when it comes to felt both in
Turkiye and in the world market.
Today, we export to approximately
65 countries and make a name
for ourselves in many countries of
the world.
We reached 2 billion dollars of
Osman Güler said in his
our first IBIA Expo fair in 2022, we
hosted over 22,400 thousand visitors
from 91 countries and 320 cities,
despite being the first. Then, in our
by hosting 19 thousand visitors from
97 countries with the participation of
more than 140 companies and more
than 300 leading brands. After the
IBIA Expo 2022 and 2023 fairs, the
positive repercussions in the sector
increased the demand for participation
in this year’s fair. In the last
2 fairs, we added two more halls to
the net 25 thousand square meter
exhibition area consisting of 3 halls
and reached 5 halls and a total of 40
thousand square meters.”
IBIA Expo aims to be an
attractive meeting point for
mattress manufacturers
Talking about the mission and
visionary works undertaken by
IBIA Expo fair in Turkiye and in the
world, Osman Güler stated that very
good organizations in the mattress
industry have been held in America
and Europe for years, but they have
not had the opportunity to meet
with many mattress manufacturers
due to visa and travel problems that
have occurred recently. Stating that
the aim of mattress manufacturers
to have the opportunity to meet and
meet with company representatives
in a wider supply network is one of
the issues that pushed the IBIA Expo
fair organization, Güler said that they
plan to make the fair in Istanbul a
very attractive and useful meeting
point for mattress manufacturers all
over the world. Making a short introductory
announcement to the visitors
who will take part in IBIA Expo, Mr
Osman said, “IBIA Expo is an international
fair that brings together professionals
from the mattress sub-industry,
machinery and equipment, as
well as an export platform where the
latest technologies are exhibited. We
would like to underline that the professional
visitors, most of whom are
senior level and company owners,
come to IBIA Expo with the aim of
making business agreements. Senior
executives, general managers, purchasing
and finance managers, who
will examine new technologies and
products on site, expand their trade
networks at IBIA EXPO. In short, the
sector follows all newly developed
products and more at IBIA Expo.”
Shrinkage in the mattress
market affected our
manufacturers
Osman Güler, who said that the
contraction in the global economy,
recession, freight crisis and the
recent pandemic problems negatively
affected our country and the Turkish
mattress industry, concluded his
interview with the following words;
“In 2023, a contraction in mattress
production is observed all over the
world as in the USA. We are also
trying to contribute to our manufacturers
to overcome these crises.
The USA, as the largest mattress
consumer country, is the focal point
of our supplier companies. A large
part of the supply of mattress manufacturers
in the region is provided
from Turkiye and since the recession
in this market has negatively affected
the manufacturers in our country, we
have carefully prepared for the ISPA
fair. Here we aim to take a large part
of the supply pie of the US Mattress
market.”
Progressing
story of adhesives used in
mattress manufacturing
Would you prefer water-based or hot melt? Where does the
Turkish market stand at this industry? Pros and cons...
Adhesives have always been
used to bond the various
mattress components together.
However, as a result of these
changes, adhesives’ role in the
manufacturing process has
become even more important.
For example, new materials, such
as fibers and foam types, are
difficult to bond together. This
has meant that the adhesives
used must now possess both
increased bonding strengths and
increased application use. As a
matter of fact, the mattress industry
has been transferred from
simple spring construction to
more complex construction and
new materials in recent years.
The changes included more than
fibers and foam types. They have
now increased in roll-coating
process and all-foam units. The
increased use of foam comfort
layers in beds, the rising popularity
of all-foam models and the
intense competition within this
just-in-time industry has heightened
the demand for fast-curing
glues. They help manufacturers
move product rapidly off the production
floor and into roll-pack or
bagging machines—and onto the
delivery truck, en route to customers.
The mattress story from
the smallest raw material to the
full production line is a combination
of values to end up with the
best mattresses.
When it comes to putting a
mattress together, adhesives
play an essential role in making
things stick. Changes in mattress
construction have required
adhesives to change their tack.
Mattress components now are
more varied than ever and bed
142 SleepTech • March - April
makers have come to depend
on two main classes of glues:
water-based and hot melt to hold
it all together.
Whether one-component or
two-component chemistries,
roll-on or spray applications,
today’s improved adhesives offer
faster drying times, better bonding
strength, cost efficiencies,
improved flexibility and increased
application ease, industry suppliers
say.
When it comes to speed, the
latest water-based formulations
give hot melts a run for their
money and are faster drying than
ever. But the two glues have their
own distinct uses in mattress and
foundation construction, suppliers
say.
What’s in store for the future?
Ever faster, automated production
lines. Adhesives suppliers
predict that, whether manufactured
on an automated production
line or hand assembled
and sprayed, the demand for
compressed and roll-packed
mattresses will continue to grow,
and, with that, the need for a
high-tack, flexible bond with
quick drying times will continue.
Also, the industry is now using
faster and more automated production
lines in addition to more
practical and better quality auxiliary
materials in order to keep up
with rising demand.
SleepTech • March - April 143
File
Adhesives are among the important
auxiliaries that the sector use
during manufacturing and these
materials have always been used
to bond the various mattress
components together. However,
as a result of the construction
changes, adhesives’ role in the
manufacturing process has become
even more important.
For example, new materials, such
as fibers and foam types are
difficult to bond together. So, the
adhesives used must now possess
increased bonding strengths
and increased application use.
Furthermore, from the standpoint
of speed, adhesives need to offer
fast drying times, more flexibility
and cost efficiencies.
Hot melts are one type of adhesive
in particular that have been
able to keep up with mattress
manufacturing changes. For
instance, hot melt adhesives
have fast holding power and
don’t need drying time. These
adhesives are popular in bonding
foams, pocket coil assemblies
and bonding fabrics and fibers.
When you think of the process
of manufacturing a mattress, the
use of hot melt adhesives may
not immediately spring to mind,
yet these adhesives can be used
in many different aspects of mattress
production including:
• Laminating layers of foam
• Fixing insulation layers
• Joining blocks of foam
• Fixing fabrics
• Fixing pillow-tops
Choosing the right application
system can make a big difference
to the cost and they can
be modified to suit specific
projects. Hot melt adhesives
make assembling mattresses
quicker and easier. Suppliers
also agree that these adhesives
and specific application systems
can help reduce the cost of the
manufacturing process. The
experts have examined enough
mattress assembly lines to know
that slow production processes
means money wasted. So, when
applying these materials, quality
spray guns or automatic applicators
can save significant time and
money. Because they are easy to
handle, many manufacturers use
adhesives for joining foam around
mattress springs, attaching cushioning
foam and insulation to the
interior of the mattress body and
keeping pillow top cushioning
and upholstery fabrics in place.
That’s important with the more
complex mattresses being assembled
today. Customers want
features like additional comfort
layers of gels and foams, which
need to be carefully attached to
the interior mattress structure
using a fastening system that is
non-toxic.
Hot-melt adhesives have a
number of advantages for the
mattress manufacturing process
including:
• Ability to handle high
volume applications
• Non-flammability
• Not requiring special ventilation
• Fast drying time
Meanwhile, water-based adhesive
suppliers promote recent
product innovations, which focus
on faster dry times and innovative
application methods that are
faster and more economical.
We have interviewed some Turkish
adhesive manufacturers and
suppliers to have an indebt look
over the industry so that the importers
and exporters may find a
better way for themselves in this
lucrative and very fast-developing
market.
