2024 is flying by, and festival season is upon us! We are focusing
on the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on this issue.
We are beyond excited the fest is celebrating Colombia! As a
Colombian-born New Orleanian, the coming together of both
of my worlds is a dream come true! Having the opportunity to
see the best of New Orleans’ music and incredible artists from
Colombia will be an unforgettable experience for me and all the
guests at the festival. Make sure to visit the Expedia Cultural
Exchange Pavillion to experience a bit of my home country!
We are also excited to partner with Virgin Hotels New Orleans for

Celebrates
Colombia

Jazz Fest’s 2024 Expedia Cultural Exchange
explores Colombia’s vibrant musical and cultural
legacy. It marks the largest exchange in the
festival’s history, with nearly 200 Colombian artists
participating.
Notable Colombian representatives include Bomba
Estéreo on April 27, ChocQuibTown’s Goyo with an
exceptional performance alongside local band ÌFÉ on
April 28, and the iconic Grupo Niche closing the festival
on May 5.
Enjoy the Chirimía rhythm with Rancho Apart and the
traditional marimba with Agrupación Changó the first
weekend. Kombilesa Mi will perform on April 27 and 28,
mixing traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms with rap in
Spanish and Palenquero, the language of Palenque, the
first town of free blacks in America.
The second weekend brings the winners from the
prestigious Petronio Álvarez Festival, Matachindé, and
the marimba fusion group Bejuco. The Caribbean fusion
arrives with the Creole Group from San Andrés on May
3 and 4.
Don’t miss cumbia, salsa, joropo, and champeta, with
performances like Jacobo Vélez’s salsa clash and Cali’s
Mambanegra. In addition, the joropo of Cimarrón and
the indigenous music with the Millo flute of Joaquín
Pérez y su Herencia Ancestral with the rhythms of the
Barranquilla Carnival on the first weekend; Lucio Feuillet
will represent the city of Pasto’s Black and White
Carnival on the second weekend.
The cultural exchange area will showcase Colombian
crafts, including backpacks, baskets, jewelry, violins,
marimbas, and more, from more than 18 artisans.
We cannot forget the Colombian flavors! Café Carmo
of New Orleans, in collaboration with chef José Blanco
of Waska, will serve Colombian street delicacies, such
as a refreshing ceviche. On May 3, guest chef Francisco
Escalona Forth will present recipes from various
regions, such as San Andrés crab stew and Cocoloco.

¡Jazz Fest celebra a Colombia!
El Intercambio Cultural Expedia de 2024 de Jazz Fest se sumerge
en el vibrante legado musical y cultural de Colombia, marcando
el mayor intercambio en la historia del festival con la participación de
cerca de 200 artistas colombianos.
Los destacados representantes colombianos incluyen a Bomba
Estéreo el 27 de abril, Goyo de ChocQuibTown con una presentación
especial junto a la banda local ÌFÉ el 28 de abril, y el icónico Grupo
Niche cerrando el festival el 5 de mayo.
El primer fin de semana, disfruta del ritmo de chirimía con
Rancho Aparte y la marimba tradicional con la Agrupación Changó.
Kombilesa Mi, se presenta el 27 y 28 de abril con ritmos tradicionales
afrocaribes mezclados con rap en español y palenquero, idioma
de Palenque, el primer pueblo de personas de raza negra libres en
América.
El segundo fin de semana trae a los ganadores del prestigioso
festival Petronio Álvarez, Matachindé, y al grupo de marimba fusión
Bejuco. La fiesta caribeña llega con Creole Group desde San Andrés
el 3 y 4 de mayo.

bailar la salsa choque de Jacobo Vélez y la Mambanegra de Cali.
Además, el joropo de Cimarrón y la música indígena con flauta de
millo de Joaquín Pérez y su Herencia Ancestral presentan los ritmos
del Carnaval de Barranquilla el primer fin de semana. El Carnaval de
Blancos y Negros de Pasto estará representado por Lucio Feuillet el
segundo fin de semana.
El área de intercambio cultural exhibirá artesanías colombianas de
más de 18 artesanos, incluyendo mochilas, canastas, joyas, violines,
marimbas y más. ¡Prueba los sabores de Colombia! Café Carmo de
Nueva Orleans, en colaboración con el chef José Blanco de Waska,
servirán deliciosos platos típicos y un ceviche refrescante. El 3 de
mayo, el chef invitado Francisco Escalona-Forth presentará recetas
de varias regiones, como el estofado de cangrejo de San Andrés y,
por supuesto, el Cocoloco. ¡No te lo pierdas!

One of the musical groups invited to the New
Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which is part
of the celebration of Colombia at the Expedia
Cultural Exchange, is Rancho Aparte.
Directly from the Department of Chocó, Rancho Aparte
represents the sounds of the Colombian Pacific, such as
abozaos, polkas, rebulú, contradances, and jugas through
its music. They are the most recognized band of Chirimía,
a rhythm that uses brass instruments and rescues the roots
and soul of a region where joy is present despite daily
difficulties. “The Chirimía has a combination of instruments
of European origin with native instruments; it is an ancient
musical format to which the voice and lyrics and other
instruments were added over time,” says Dino Manuelle,
Rancho Aparte’s vocalist.
Their performance at Jazz Fest will bring them their first
in the United States. They hope to discover more New
Orleans rhythms, connect with other bands from around
the world who will be present at the festival, and, of
course, be ready to make the audience enjoy themselves.
“At Rancho Aparte, we do not spare a single drop of sweat.
The audience will jump, sing, and get to know the music of
our population and our country. They will feel everything
from emotion to reflection with the lyrics of our songs,’ says
Manuelle.

The group’s energy has made them stand out in
Colombia, and they have conquered audiences on stages
such as the WOMEX Festival in Budapest and the Fuji
Rock Festival in Japan. They have been the favorites of
the Colombian Pacific music festival, the Petronio Alvarez
in Cali, Colombia, where they performed an exciting brass
band exchange with the renowned Hot 8 Brass Band from
New Orleans.
For Manuelle, the experience of playing with the Hot 8
Brass Band was a great idea. “We connected, and three
groups played a Chirimía song together. The energy was
tremendous, and we didn’t want to leave the stage,” he
said, adding that the similarity between New Orleans brass
and the Chirimía is in the percussion and wind instruments,
in that it is very urban and street music.

Directamente desde el Departamento
del Chocó, Rancho Aparte representa a
través de su música los sonidos propios
del Pacífico colombiano como abozaos,
polkas, rebulú, contradanzas, y jugas. Ellos
son la banda más reconocida de chirimía,
un ritmo que utiliza instrumentos de metal
y que rescata las raíces y el alma de una
región donde la alegría está presente, a
pesar de las dificultades diarias. “La chirimía
tiene una combinación de instrumentos de
origen europeo con instrumentos nativos,
es un formato musical muy antiguo al
que, a través del tiempo, se le ha venido
agregando elementos como la voz y otros
tipos de instrumentos”, dice Dino Manuelle,
vocalista de Rancho Aparte.
La energía del grupo los ha hecho
sobresalir en Colombia y poco a poco han
conquistado las audiencias de escenarios
como el Festival WOMEX en Budapest y
el Festival Fuji Rock en Japón. Han sido
los favoritos del festival de la música del
Pacífico colombiano, el Petronio Álvarez
en la ciudad de Cali, Colombia, donde
realizaron un interesante intercambio de
bandas de metales junto a la reconocida
Hot 8 Brass Band de Nueva Orleans.
Para Manuelle, la experiencia de
tocar con Hot 8 Brass Band fue una gran
idea. ”Logramos hacer una conexión y
nos juntamos tres agrupaciones a tocar
juntos un tema de chirimía. La energía fue
tremenda y no nos queríamos bajar del
escenario”, dijo, agregando que la similitud
con el brass de Nueva Orleans y la chirimía
está en los instrumentos de percusión y de
viento, y en que ambas son música muy
urbana y callejera.
Su presentación en Jazz Fest será la
primera en los Estados Unidos. Tienen la
ilusión de descubrir más ritmos de Nueva
Orleans, conectar con otras bandas del
mundo presentes en el festival y, por
supuesto, poner a gozar a la audiencia. “En
Rancho Aparte no nos ahorramos ni una
sola gota de sudor. El público va a saltar,
a cantar, y a conocer la música de nuestra
población y nuestro país. Van a sentir desde
la emoción hasta la reflexión con las letras
de nuestras canciones”, asegura Manuelle.

few years ago, a Bernardo de
Gálvez statue went missing from
Canal Street’s landscape.
Donated by the Government of Spain,
the Bernardo de Gálvez Monument was
erected in 1977 to commemorate the
bicentennial year of the independence
of the United States to which the Spanish
Governor so decisively contributed.
When work began to convert the
World Trade Center Building (“WTC”) into
a hotel and residences, the Four Seasons
Group committed to protecting the statue
by removing it during the construction
phase and refurbishing it in preparation
for its return to its historical site, guarding
the river.
The Gálvez statue is particularly
significant to members of the local
Hispanic community and all lovers of New
Orleans’ rich history.
Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish
military leader and colonial administrator,
played a pivotal role in the American
Revolutionary War. Serving as the
Governor of Louisiana, Gálvez secured
vital support for the American colonies,
contributing significantly to their fight
for independence. Gálvez’s strategic
brilliance and unwavering commitment
earned him the “Hero of the American
Revolution” title.
In 1777, Gálvez, at 30, became the fifth
governor of the Louisiana Territory during
the Spanish governance period.
His career was propelled by his father,
a general in Central America, and his
uncle, a royal minister under Carlos III.
The young governor promptly endeared
himself to the local colony by marrying
Marie Félicité de Saint Maxent d’Estrehan,
a Creole beauty.
Because of his outstanding
contributions to our region, concerned
residents want to bring Bernardo back
and raise the funds necessary to re-erect
and relocate the Gálvez Monument on
an enhanced pedestal, which the new
restoration design recommends and the
monument deserves.

Many know her as Deejay Carolina,
but those close to her call her
Carol. She wanted to study
psychology until she met her now husband
and manager, Juanes Altamirano, a.k.a.
Deejay Juanes, an established New Orleans
Latin nightclub and radio DJ. Dating him
made her curious to find out how it all
worked. “It’s like when you get on an airplane,
and you see a pilot’s control room with all
the buttons and stuff… and I would think,
‘How do you do this?!’” She recalls telling
Altamirano she wanted to learn how to DJ.
“I don’t think he took me seriously at first,”
she laughs. He gave her one week to prove
she was serious. He soon learned Zavala had
an exceptional talent. “Her good memory,”
he said. He added that most DJs usually cue
a song or two to mix into what’s currently
playing; Zavala could cue up to seven songs
without forgetting them. ‘Carolina learned
in one week what it took me many years to
learn,” said Altamirano.
Zavala made her DJ debut at the House of
Blues in New Orleans. She remembers being
excited and nervous. “I knew a lot of people
were curious to see how I was going to do.”
She felt pressure to do well and favorably
represent Deejay Juanes, her mentor.
Her popularity kept growing. She DJ’d a set
at every notable nightclub in New Orleans
and its surrounding areas. In 2014, the NBA
sought a female DJ who could mix English
and Spanish format for a party after the All-
Star Game. Deejay Carolina got the gig.
After that, she had bookings in nightclubs
and festivals outside Louisiana. In early
2015, Univision announced DJ auditions
to compete in the DJ@PJ competition for
Premios Juventud (Youth Awards). Even
with fans tagging her in the post, she told
Altamirano she didn’t think she had a
chance. He told her, “Do it anyway because
you may have something else that other DJs
don’t have,” remembers Zavala. “Ever since
that moment, I began to believe in myself.”
She competed for six weeks, became a fan
favorite, and was the only female in the top
three. The national exposure catapulted
her to play in almost every U.S. state and
presented Zavala with opportunities to open
for major music acts such as Daddy Yankee,
El Torito, Zacarías Ferreíra, and Bad Bunny,
to name a few.
Since the beginning of her DJ journey, she
established El Macaneo (Honduran Slang
for Wild Party or Good Time), a virtual DJ
concept to entertain her fans on Facebook
LIVE and to give exposure to independent
musicians. When the nightclubs closed
during the pandemic, Zavala strengthened
her connection with her audience, turning
El Macaneo into a virtual nightclub concept
with over 4 Million followers. She took El
Macaneo to TikTok LIVE with viewers
from all over the world.
Deejay Carolina’s future goals know no
bounds. With a tour spanning 40 U.S. cities
plus Latin American and European stops on
the horizon, she’s a force to be reckoned with
in the music world.
Beyond her DJ prowess, Zavala dreams
of expanding her family. She chuckles
when asked if she would add a little Deejay
Carolina or little Deejay Juanes to the mix.
“Only one, boy or girl. Whatever God
sends!” She wants to leave a lasting legacy for
aspiring female DJs. “I wasn’t the first Latina
female DJ, but one of the firsts, and I know I
have opened doors for other girls to do what
I love,” Zavala says. Through her journey,
she’s shattered stereotypes, proving that
women can thrive in the male-dominated
realm of DJing.

llaman Carol. Quería estudiar
psicología hasta que conoció a su ahora
esposo y manager, Juanes Altamirano,
también conocido como Deejay Juanes,
un establecido DJ de clubes y de radio
de Nueva Orleans. Salir con él le causó
curiosidad de saber cómo funcionaba todo.
“Es como cuando te subes a un avión y ves
la cabina del piloto con todos los botones y
esas cosas… y piensas: ‘¡¿Cómo hacen eso?!’”
Recuerda haberle dicho a Altamirano que
quería aprender a ser DJ. “No creo que al
principio me tomara en serio”, se ríe. Él le
dio una semana para demostrar que hablaba
en serio, pero descubrió rápidamente que
Zavala tenía un talento excepcional: su
buena memoria. Altamirano cuenta que
mientras la mayoría de los DJ suelen alistar
una o dos canciones para mezclarlas con
lo que se está reproduciendo actualmente,
Zavala podía alistar hasta siete canciones
sin olvidarlas. “Carolina aprendió en una
semana lo que a mí me llevó muchos años
aprender”, dijo Altamirano.
Zavala hizo su debut como DJ en House
of Blues de Nueva Orleans. Recuerda estar
emocionada y nerviosa. “Sabía que mucha
gente tenía curiosidad por ver cómo lo iba
a hacer”. Sentía la presión de hacerlo bien y
representar favorablemente a Deejay Juanes,
su mentor.
Su popularidad siguió creciendo. Fue DJ
en todos los clubes nocturnos destacados
de Nueva Orleans y sus alrededores. En
2014, la NBA buscaba a una DJ que
pudiera mezclar formato inglés y español
para una fiesta después del Juego de
Estrellas. Deejay Carolina, fue seleccionada.
Luego de esto consiguió presentaciones
en clubes nocturnos y festivales fuera de
Luisiana. A principios de 2015, Univision
anunció audiciones de DJ para competir
en la competencia DJ@PJ de los Premios
Juventud. Incluso cuando los fanáticos la
etiquetaron en la publicación, ella le decía
a Altamirano que no creía que tuviera
ninguna oportunidad. Él le dijo: “Hazlo
de todos modos porque puede que tengas
algo más que otros DJ no tienen”, recuerda
Zavala. “Desde ese momento comencé a
creer en mí misma”. Compitió durante seis

a TikTok LIVE donde lo convirtió en un
concepto de discoteca virtual con más de 4

El futuro de Deejay Carolina, no conoce
límites. Con una gira que abarcará 40
ciudades de EE. UU. además de paradas en
América Latina y Europa en el horizonte,
ella es claramente un referente en su
industria que no podemos ignorar.
Más allá de su destreza como DJ, Zavala
sueña con ampliar su familia. Se ríe cuando
le preguntan si agregaría a una pequeña
Deejay Carolina o un pequeño Deejay
Juanes a la mezcla: “Sólo uno, niño o niña.
¡Lo que Dios envíe!”
Ella quiere dejar un legado duradero
para las aspirantes a DJ. “No fui la primera
DJ latina, pero sí una de las primeras, y sé
que he abierto puertas para que otras chicas
hagan lo que amo”, dice Zavala. A lo largo de
su viaje, ha roto estereotipos, demostrando
que las mujeres pueden prosperar en un
ámbito dominado por los hombres.

Sula, Honduras. I’ve been in New Orleans since
September 2022.
Where did you go to school? I attended high
school at Instituto Tecnológico Administración
de Empresas (Intae). I received my degree
in Communications and Publicity from the
Universidad de San Pedro Sula (USAP).
What does your job entail? As a news
reporter for Telemundo 42, my job is to inform
the Hispanic community. I contact community
leaders, organizations, and authorities to
provide our community with helpful information
that can help. I have to stay active on social
media all the time.
What do you enjoy the most about your
job? I love it when my videos or reports help
someone. I want my interviews to make a
difference, entertain, inform, inspire, and make
people feel special.
What is your favorite activity in New
Orleans? I enjoy going downtown for a drink,
and why not Bourbon Street? There’s always
something fun to do in New Orleans. I also
enjoy walking or having coffee in City Park.
What is your favorite food? Chinese fried rice
and noodles. But being from San Pedro Sula,

place in my heart.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy going to the movies, especially horror
movies. I also like to go on road trips and visit
new places. I enjoy going to dinner with my
partner, too. We’re foodies!
