He <strong>in</strong>sisted that tackl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>flation<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>s the top priority, as are enhanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

competitiveness, boost<strong>in</strong>g productivity<br />

and improv<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>vestment climate.<br />

Data earlier this month showed annualized<br />

<strong>in</strong>flation climbed to 68.5% <strong>in</strong> March, yet<br />

Central Bank of the Republic of <strong>Türkiye</strong><br />

(CBRT) Governor Fatih Karahan said it is<br />

on track to reach the 36% target by the end<br />

of the year. Yet, he said markets believed<br />

the target would be achieved with a threemonth<br />

delay.<br />

The central bank has raised its key oneweek<br />

repo rate by 4,150 basis po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

from 8.5% to 50% s<strong>in</strong>ce last June, ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g to ease demand, the ma<strong>in</strong> driver<br />

of <strong>in</strong>flation.<br />

After 500 basis po<strong>in</strong>t hike that stunned<br />

the markets, the bank cited a deteriorat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

outlook and pledged to tighten even<br />

further if it expects the price situation to<br />

worsen significantly.<br />

“We need to tighten the fiscal stance to<br />

provide more support to (the) central<br />

bank, to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>flation down at a time<br />

when <strong>in</strong>flation was de-anchored, where<br />

pric<strong>in</strong>g behaviors were pretty ... unruly,”<br />

Şimşek said.<br />

Inflation is expected to peak at around<br />

75% <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g months, accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Karahan, before enter<strong>in</strong>g what officials<br />

expect to be a steep downward trend <strong>in</strong><br />

the second half of <strong>2024</strong>.<br />

The m<strong>in</strong>ister added that the sharp decl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> the cost of <strong>in</strong>surance aga<strong>in</strong>st a sovereign<br />

default, alongside positive comments from<br />

rat<strong>in</strong>g agencies, are evidence that <strong>in</strong>vestors<br />

have rega<strong>in</strong>ed confidence <strong>in</strong> the Turkish<br />

growth and development<br />

As known, the Turkish economy has shown remarkable performance<br />

with its steady growth over the last decade. A sound macroeconomic<br />

strategy <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with prudent fiscal policies<br />

and major structural reforms <strong>in</strong> effect s<strong>in</strong>ce 2002 has <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

the Turkish economy <strong>in</strong>to the globalized world, while transform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the country <strong>in</strong>to one of the major recipients of Foreign Direct<br />

Investments <strong>in</strong> its region.<br />

Key factors which attract foreign capital <strong>in</strong>flows to Turkey ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude the market size, consumer composition, friendly <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

legislation and bank<strong>in</strong>g system together with other attractiveness<br />

aris<strong>in</strong>g from highly skilled human resources <strong>in</strong> production<br />

and management, the unsaturated domestic market with high potential,<br />

the credibility of the Turkish economy. We are confident that the<br />

Turkish economy will not deviate from susta<strong>in</strong>able growth and development.<br />

Located at the <strong>in</strong>tersection of Europe, Asia, Russia and Africa, Turkey’s<br />

geographical location and high-tech <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>in</strong>vestments<br />

offer significant advantages <strong>in</strong> terms of the global manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

market. Despite the geopolitical risks faced, our country<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be the production base of Europe and the world.<br />

It should be noted that exports and export-oriented policies <strong>in</strong><br />

particular are regarded as a growth stimulator by the Turkish<br />

government officials. As a matter of fact, open<strong>in</strong>g up a country’s<br />

market to the <strong>in</strong>ternational markets allows a country more efficient<br />

production and allocation of resources as the country can<br />

concentrate on the production of goods <strong>in</strong> which it has a comparative<br />

advantage based on its factor endowments.<br />

With <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>in</strong>vestments and the strength of its geographical<br />

location, Turkey cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be the lead<strong>in</strong>g production base<br />

<strong>in</strong> the world.<br />

As for Turkey’s exporters, they wish to relentlessly <strong>in</strong>vest, manufacture<br />

and export. They are particularly <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

evaluat<strong>in</strong>g and select<strong>in</strong>g target markets by try<strong>in</strong>g to answer global<br />

questions.<br />

A new manager spends a week at his new office with the<br />

manager he is replac<strong>in</strong>g. On the last day the depart<strong>in</strong>g<br />

manager tells him, “I have left three numbered envelopes<br />

<strong>in</strong> the desk drawer. Open an envelope if you encounter a<br />

crisis you can’t solve.”<br />

Three months down the track there is a major drama,<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g goes wrong - the usual stuff - and the manager<br />

feels very threatened by it all. He remembers the part<strong>in</strong>g<br />

words of his predecessor and opens the first envelope. The<br />

message <strong>in</strong>side says “Blame your predecessor!” He does<br />

this and gets off the hook.<br />

About half a year later, the company is experienc<strong>in</strong>g a dip<br />

<strong>in</strong> sales, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with serious product problems. The<br />

manager quickly opens the second envelope. The message<br />

read, “Reorganize!” This he does, and the company<br />

quickly rebounds.<br />

Three months later, at his next crisis, he opens the<br />

third envelope. The message <strong>in</strong>side says “Prepare three<br />

envelopes”.<br />

A man goes <strong>in</strong>to a pet shop to buy a parrot. The shop<br />

owner po<strong>in</strong>ts to three identical look<strong>in</strong>g parrots on a perch<br />

and says, “the parrot on the left costs 500 dollars”.<br />

“Why does the parrot cost so much,” asks the man.<br />

The shop owner says, “well, the parrot knows how to use<br />

a computer”.<br />

The man then asks about the next parrot to be told that<br />

this one costs 1,000 dollars because it can do everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the other parrot can do plus it knows how to use the UNIX<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g system.<br />

Naturally, the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly startled man asks about the<br />

third parrot to be told that it costs 2,000 dollars. Needless<br />

to say this begs the question, “What can it do?”<br />

with Burcu Genç a tattoo artist<br />

Burcu (@chandra.tattoo) works mostly <strong>in</strong> Istanbul and travels as much as she<br />

can. We sat down for a chat about her journey,her <strong>in</strong>spiration and tattoos.<br />

Can you tell us about yourself and what made you become a tattoo artist?<br />

I am Burcu Genç, Chandra Tattoo<br />

I was born <strong>in</strong> Istanbul <strong>in</strong> 1993 and have been a tattoo artist for 4 years. Draw<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, tattoos have always been a part of my life. When I was a child, my grandfather’s<br />

oil pa<strong>in</strong>ts and my cous<strong>in</strong>’s clays were my favorite toys.<br />

I’ve always wanted art to be a part <strong>in</strong> my life and not just a hobby. I’ve been gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tattoos s<strong>in</strong>ce I was 17, but I never thought I could tattoo as well. I bought my first<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e with the advice of an artist friend I went to get a tattoo and with the<br />

encouragement of my family. After that, I entered the tattoo world by work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a tattoo apprentice at the studio where I currently work <strong>in</strong> Istanbul. It was the<br />

best decision I made and I am sure that no other profession could have made me<br />

happier.<br />

How would you describe your style of tattoo<strong>in</strong>g? What made you choose that<br />

style?<br />

I work <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>el<strong>in</strong>e style. I turn surreal pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>to tattoo design with my own<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es and adapt them to the most aesthetic looks on the body.<br />

The most enjoyable part of work<strong>in</strong>g on surreal designs is that their mean<strong>in</strong>gs are<br />

completely open to personal <strong>in</strong>terpretation and <strong>in</strong>ternalization. In this way, I can<br />

personalize the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs accord<strong>in</strong>g to the mean<strong>in</strong>gs and stories that people want<br />

to carry on their bodies and tattoo that memory <strong>in</strong>to their bodies with a surrealistic<br />

design. Although for someone else it may seem like just an umbrella hang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the cloud, the personal mean<strong>in</strong>g attached to it is what makes that tattoo, the<br />

design, an artwork and forever accessory.<br />

Do you tattoo only flash design or you do custom design as well?<br />

I work both actually. Im so greatful to the customers who accept my flash designs<br />

as tattoos. I almost always choose my tattoos from artists flashes as well. But i<br />

cant thank enough who trust me with custom designs. My clients share their very<br />

special memories, feel<strong>in</strong>gs with me and trust my visual taste to express it as tattoo.<br />

It’s <strong>in</strong>describably beautiful how this feels.<br />

What is the most important advice you can give someone for choos<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

tattoo artist and design?<br />

Tattoos are an art that you can use to express oneself without explanation. Many<br />

of my clients got their tattoos to remember a time or leave precious marks on their<br />

body. When you look at your tattoos you look back on yourself at that time of your<br />

life. Tattoos are not only a pattern that you carry on, but also the moment you will<br />

never forget. That’s why it’s very important to choose the artist whose style and<br />

tattoos you trust and love the most, who you th<strong>in</strong>k match your energy the most.
