deficits and fares <strong>in</strong>crease while readership, service and<br />

performance slowly decl<strong>in</strong>e. Focus<strong>in</strong>g human habitat<br />

around transit systems has been an ongo<strong>in</strong>g struggle <strong>in</strong><br />

most municipal areas, as both agricultural, wetlands and<br />

other wild-lands are dra<strong>in</strong>ed, filled and graded for urban<br />

and suburban expansion. Us<strong>in</strong>g transit networks to guide<br />

new construction means putt<strong>in</strong>g more people on less<br />

land, build<strong>in</strong>g more densely <strong>in</strong> areas already settled, and<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g space for others.<br />

In dense settlements such as cities we <strong>in</strong>vent<br />

circulation systems for bodies and waste that allow,<br />

if not flourish<strong>in</strong>g, at least function<strong>in</strong>g. Collective transit is<br />

one <strong>of</strong> these circulatory systems and as far as motorized<br />

transport goes, such aggregation is a great application <strong>of</strong><br />

the technology. It also means economies <strong>of</strong> movement:<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g closer or consolidat<strong>in</strong>g access to necessary<br />

resources and lower<strong>in</strong>g pollution loads generated by<br />

transportation. (7) Transit is a structure that is about<br />

pool<strong>in</strong>g and shar<strong>in</strong>g resources.<br />

Buses and vans also model aggregation at the<br />

next scale up, the neighbourhood. Perhaps we might<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> them more like pocket parks or cafes, borrowed<br />

places for <strong>in</strong>formal, temporary gather<strong>in</strong>gs. (8) Each
