Small-arms and mortar fire followed. <strong>The</strong> enemy’s aim was off. Neither<br />

the troopers nor their vehicles suffered any damage.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second ambush triggered the commitment of the pl<strong>at</strong>oon from<br />

Company A, but the unit’s arrival had no effect on the enemy, some fifteen<br />

to twenty men. Instead, another round of RPG and small-arms fire<br />

ensued, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind th<strong>at</strong> the capture of Saddam<br />

had done nothing to dampen the ardor of the insurgents in Samarra. Even<br />

so, the enemy’s decision to stay and fight proved unwise, for thirty U.S.<br />

soldiers dismounted from Company A’s Strykers r<strong>at</strong>her than the twelve<br />

to fifteen carried by a similar number of 4th Division Bradleys. With<br />

so many troops on hand, the Americans could easily maintain security<br />

around their vehicles while also fielding a respectable dismounted fighting<br />

force. <strong>The</strong> two pl<strong>at</strong>oons began to maneuver aggressively against<br />

their adversaries.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ensuing firefight lasted forty-five minutes before the last of the<br />

enemy retre<strong>at</strong>ed. By then the 3d Pl<strong>at</strong>oon, Company B, had killed eleven<br />

insurgents. Sgt. Randall W. Davis, a Company B sniper supporting<br />
