Shortly thereafter, Hicks’ pl<strong>at</strong>oon reached a point where it could observe<br />

the bridge <strong>at</strong> Abbas al Amir. Although unable to detect any enemy<br />

activity, the scouts discovered th<strong>at</strong> an explosion had damaged the span so<br />

badly th<strong>at</strong> the 201st’s HETS could not cross. Reed ordered the scouts to<br />

set up an assembly area and to await the arrival of the remainder of the<br />

task force. While Hicks’ men established a perimeter around a nearby<br />

village, local people informed his interpreters th<strong>at</strong> insurgents had blown<br />

the bridge only a few hours earlier.<br />

<strong>The</strong> rest of TF arrow arrived just after midnight and hunkered down<br />

in a circular defensive form<strong>at</strong>ion to await the dawn. Soldiers who had<br />

been on the move almost continuously since 0300 the previous day tried<br />

to c<strong>at</strong>ch a few more moments of rest, but the unit’s leaders had little time<br />

for sleep. Colonel Reed, who had already made the decision to head as<br />

far south as Al Kut if necessary, directed his subordin<strong>at</strong>es to prepare their<br />

units to move out <strong>at</strong> dawn. R<strong>at</strong>her than put the Scout Pl<strong>at</strong>oon in the lead<br />

again, however, he instructed Captain Hensler’s Company A to depart<br />

ahead of the main body and to loc<strong>at</strong>e and secure an intact crossing site<br />

over the Tigris. <strong>The</strong> move to the south th<strong>at</strong> followed during the next<br />
