ACEM Annual Report 2011 30 FACULTY REPORTS (continued) emergency medicine topics. This has met with great success and we look forward to its continuation in 2012. Other issues that have been addressed by Tasmania Faculty include exploration of a state-wide training scheme, rotation of FACEMs amongst different sites, ultrasound workshops, improvement in ED information technology, four hour rule and the ever present access block. We anticipate 2012 will be equally busy for our small Faculty and we look forward to seeing many of you at our Annual Scientifi c Meeting in Hobart. Brian Doyle, Chair Victoria The Victorian Faculty continues to evolve. Issues, which have been addressed and debated furiously over the year, have included: National Targets and the Health Reform Agenda The Faculty received much feedback and enthusiastic debate over the reforms and targets. Although opinions were strong and vocal, for and against, the Vic Faculty has thrown its support behind the reform agenda. We will now concentrate on the implementation and ensure that the concepts outlined in the Expert Panel submission regarding ‘whole hospital reform’, inpatient process change and addition of capacity through process and investment are introduced in a transparent and accountable manner. Access block and ramping is a continuing problem but, through ongoing pressure, open discussion and networking with other organisations and the media, the issue remains high on the political and social agenda. Paediatric services Concern was expressed by many regarding Paediatric services and expertise outside of the main centres. The College is actively pursuing this as a major concern and is anticipating further discussion and change. Regional and Rural support The Faculty made a submission to the Department of Health (DoH) regarding its thoughts on how to offer better service, support and patient outcomes to regional and rural Victoria. Enthusiastic support for the DoH is expected. IT With the ‘Health Smart’ platform and Cerner implementation struggling along, the Faculty is preparing a submission, through an IT working group, to the Minister outlining IT needs both in EDs and the wider system. At this stage, the IT program is dogged by ongoing diffi culties, and we hope to be involved in fi nding a solution. Faculty Scientifi c Meeting Due to clashes with other College events, this year’s scheduled meeting has been moved to March 2012. More information is coming soon. All in all, it’s been a proactive year, with engagement of many FACEMs in activities both within and outside the College. I anticipate that emergency medicine and members of the College will continue to elevate these issues, and others as they arise, with intelligence, enthusiasm and a continued focus on how we can best deliver our brand of medicine throughout Victoria. Simon Judkins, Chair Western Australia The WA Faculty Board has consisted of the following members: R Graydon (Chair), J Cooper (Hon. Secretary), M Summerscales (Hon. Treasurer) and S Rennie. The Annual Seminar was held at the Fremantle campus of the University of Notre Dame Australia, in May 2011. Speakers included Kim Snowball - Director General of WA Health, David Mountain - President of the WA Branch of the AMA and FACEM, and Alana Killen - CEO of ACEM. All speakers gave most interesting insights into the theme: ‘Our futures in the WA health system’. There were three 4.10 registrar presentations. The number of 4.10 presentations appears to have diminished over the last few years. The convenors of this year’s seminar were Greg Sweetman and Robert Graydon. The four hour rule implementation continues in the metropolitan general hospitals and regional centres. The WA Faculty membership remains divided over the effectiveness of the program. The compliance targets are proving to be diffi cult to achieve in most participating hospitals during the current winter. The state government has formed a committee to investigate the four hour rule program. To date, this committee has yet to report. The state government continues with an aggressive program of hospital development. It is anticipated that the new 783 bed Fiona Stanley Hospital will open in 2014, followed by the 307 bed Midland Health Campus in 2015. The Princess Margaret Hospital for Children will relocate to the Queen Elizabeth II in Nedlands over the next several years. With signifi cant changes to the hospital infrastructure will come considerable workforce issues that have yet to be addressed. A number of metropolitan-based Fellows continue to provide fl y in/ fl y out emergency medicine services to several regional hospitals. It is anticipated that this requirement for a mobile workforce will expand over the next few years as funding from the state government Royalties for Regions program grows. Robert Graydon, Chair
