ACEM Annual Report 2011 32 EMERGENCY MEDICINE AUSTRALASIA Anthony F T Brown, Editor-in-Chief The high points of the year included the release of our 2010 Impact Factor (IF) in mid-June, which had risen to 1.089 from 0.901. This IF has taken Emergency Medicine Australasia (EMA) past Pediatric Emergency Care that was ranked 10th out of the 19 journals in last year’s ISI Journal Citation Reports®: Emergency Medicine Category. However, as there are now 23 journals within this category, and somewhat surprisingly as no less than three new journals all achieved inaugural IFs above us, our ranking is currently 13th out of 23. Interestingly, Resuscitation now tops the category rankings with an IF of 4.177 closely followed by Annals of Emergency Medicine at 4.142. Although the IF does not tell you which papers were cited, our own competitive IF again demonstrates that Emergency Medicine Australasia continues to provide access to a scientifi cally solid and internationally reputable journal. In addition, we successfully removed all drug company advertising from Emergency Medicine Australasia this year, with the ‘cost of independence’ to our subscribers being a mere $5 increase in Fellow and trainee subscriptions. Our laudable stand against pharmaceutical advertising was even recognised in the correspondence section of the July 2 issue of the Lancet. This stance, endorsed since Professor George Jelinek championed the move, is a proud achievement for our journal. In other areas, unfortunately this year has been a challenging one in particular for our publisher Wiley-Blackwell, as major process problems arose including editorial offi ce issues in Melbourne and production issues in Singapore. The underlying problems were investigated and processes put in place by Wiley-Blackwell to mitigate against any recurrence. In addition, ACEM offered assistance from their newly appointed Director of Policy and Research, which was gratefully accepted and commences in October. No sooner were the challenges of the fi rst half of the year beginning to settle down, when it was discovered that the online ‘Author Guide’ was substantially inferior to the version that was published as usual, once-a-year, in the February issue of Emergency Medicine Australasia. Indeed, in comparison, the online ‘Author Guide’ was found to be miserably out of date! Thus a new online ‘Author Guide’ has been fi nalised and will shortly be released, which will be carefully updated and also contain the promised additional new material to assist authors who submit papers on Disaster or International Emergency Medicine articles (which follow a slightly different format than all other submitted articles). Despite the challenges this year, the journal has continued to thrive and has attracted more submissions than ever, such that there is a backlog of accepted papers awaiting print publication. Although of course all original research and review articles are immediately published online on Early View with a unique citable .doi (Digital Object Identifi er) number, after being fi nalised and type-set by production in Singapore, the six printed journals will have increased page counts of 120 per issue from 2012 (up from an average of 98). Finally, we again welcomed some new Section Editors in 2011 including Peter Jones (original research), Mark Little (toxicology) and Meredith Borland (paediatrics). I would like to sincerely thank outgoing editor Matthew O’Meara for his contribution and dedication to the paediatrics section, which has grown strongly. Indeed, this commendation extends to all of the Section Editors, peer reviewers, and Editorial Board for their hard work in 2011. The journal would not exist without your creative scientifi c expertise, as ever offered so generously and selfl essly. Thank you to all of you – it is much appreciated. I look forward to 2012 with a tighter and more reliable production process, as well as to seeing you send your best research to Emergency Medicine Australasia, safe in the knowledge that we do indeed compete strongly in the international arena and, equally importantly, that you will be reaching a large, like-minded readership. AWARDS Australian Honours The College records with honour the awarding of the following Australian Honour to a College Fellow on 13 June 2011. Dr Anne F D’Arcy The award of Medal of the Order of Australia was granted to Dr Anne D’Arcy for service to emergency medicine and to professional organisations. Teaching Excellence Award The Teaching Excellence Award is awarded to Fellows at the discretion of the Council of the College in recognition of distinguished and extensive service in teaching and learning for the College. The College is delighted to record that three Teaching Excellence Awards were presented at the College Ceremony in November 2010, to Matthew Chu, Bob Dunn and Trevor Jackson. John Gilroy Potts Award The John Gilroy Potts Award is an award made to the author of an article published in a refereed journal, the content of which made a signifi cant contribution to emergency medicine. In 2010, the award was presented to Geoffrey Isbister (lead author) and Simon Brown for a paper entitled Failure of antivenom to improve recovery in Australian snakebite coagulopathy. Emergency Medicine Research Foundation The Morson Taylor Research Award is made by the Emergency Medicine Research Foundation to foster research in emergency medicine. The Morson Taylor Research Award for 2010 was awarded to David Taylor for a study entitled A simple target to change clinical practice in pain management.
