3 Why sport <strong>in</strong>jury matters<br />

While <strong>the</strong> societal benefits <strong>of</strong> sport, as ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> fitness, reduc<strong>in</strong>g risk <strong>of</strong> diseases, recreation,<br />
educational effects, or <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>alized groups are well aware<br />
among policy makers, relatively little attention is paid to <strong>the</strong> unwanted side-effects <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>juries. <strong>Injuries</strong> are not only damages to health, but also restra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chances <strong>of</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more people physically active and benefitt<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> positive effects <strong>of</strong> sport.<br />
Table/figure 2 illustrates <strong>the</strong> benefits for <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> stakeholder groups as well as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
losses due to <strong>in</strong>juries.<br />
