Table/figure 16: Comprehensive view on <strong>in</strong>juries by doma<strong>in</strong>s responsible for prevention<br />

(Bauer & Ste<strong>in</strong>er 2009)<br />

5.8. million <strong>in</strong> hospitals treated sport <strong>in</strong>juries (or 8.4. medically treated <strong>in</strong>juries <strong>in</strong> total)<br />

count for about 14% <strong>of</strong> all un<strong>in</strong>tentional <strong>in</strong>juries (“accidents”). About 9% (or 0.6<br />

million cases) have to be admitted for fur<strong>the</strong>r treatment. This share, which can be<br />

seen as a rough <strong>in</strong>dicator for <strong>the</strong> average severity <strong>of</strong> sport <strong>in</strong>juries, is significantly<br />

lower than for all un<strong>in</strong>tentional <strong>in</strong>juries (20%) and for road traffic <strong>in</strong>juries <strong>in</strong> particular<br />

(30%). The cut-<strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> sport from table/figure 15 and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> estimate<br />

on disabilities allows for <strong>the</strong> common representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> health burden <strong>in</strong> form <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> “<strong>in</strong>jury pyramid” (table/figure 17).
