There are also substantial differences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> preferences <strong>of</strong> age groups (table/figure<br />
10). Gymnastics with appliances are dom<strong>in</strong>ated by children, probably because <strong>the</strong>se<br />
are commonly practiced <strong>in</strong> schools, but much less attractive (or available) for adults.<br />
Racquet sports seem to be much less practiced by children, adolescents and young<br />
adults than by <strong>the</strong> older generations (table/figure 11).<br />

The knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> specific <strong>in</strong>jury patterns for each type <strong>of</strong> sport is important to<br />
know <strong>in</strong> order to adequately address <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> personal protection equipment <strong>in</strong><br />
sports. Table/figure 12 ranks <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> type <strong>of</strong> sports by <strong>the</strong>ir share <strong>of</strong> head <strong>in</strong>juries.<br />
In fact, head <strong>in</strong>juries comprise various types <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>juries, from cuts which are quite<br />
frequent <strong>in</strong> squash to bra<strong>in</strong> damage due to lack <strong>of</strong> oxygen, which is common <strong>in</strong> neardrown<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>Sport</strong> helmet protect <strong>in</strong> particular from traumatic bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>juries due to<br />
severe blows. While helmets are well established e.g. <strong>in</strong> ice-hockey, cycl<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
horseback-rid<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y are much less accepted <strong>in</strong> squash, and unknown <strong>in</strong> soccer and<br />
