A three year average <strong>of</strong> EU IDB data (2006 – 2008) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eligible eleven IDB countries<br />
is used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> report to <strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>the</strong> EU scope <strong>of</strong> sports <strong>in</strong>juries. All cases with any<br />
given sport activity dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>jury” have been used. The data were extracted <strong>in</strong> August<br />
2011. 57.905 cases out <strong>of</strong> 793.482 cases matched <strong>the</strong> search criterion, represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />
14% <strong>of</strong> all cases. For <strong>the</strong> projection it has been assumed that <strong>the</strong> sample from eleven<br />
countries is an unbiased, random sample <strong>of</strong> all sport <strong>in</strong>juries treated <strong>in</strong> emergency<br />
departments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire EU-27. For time series all available IDB data 1996 – 2008<br />
were used.<br />
The results for two def<strong>in</strong>itions <strong>of</strong> sports <strong>in</strong>juries are given <strong>in</strong> table/figure 7. One is by<br />
<strong>the</strong> IDB variable “activity” <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r one is by variable type <strong>of</strong> sports (see chapter<br />
“IDB def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> sports <strong>in</strong>juries”). The differences reflect national variations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IDB standards, which shall be ironed out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forthcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> JAMIE-project (Eurosafe 2012a). For <strong>the</strong> current analysis <strong>the</strong><br />
def<strong>in</strong>ition by type <strong>of</strong> sports has been used as far as available. Table/figure 8 shows<br />
<strong>the</strong> availability and total number <strong>of</strong> EU IDB cases data used for this study.<br />
