6.3 Results<br />

”Team ball sports” account for about 40% <strong>of</strong> all hospital treated sports <strong>in</strong>juries. It is<br />

known from various studies (Van der Sman et al. 2003) that this high share does not<br />

only reflect that team ball sports are very popular and widely practiced, but also a<br />

relatively high <strong>in</strong>jury risk, which is ma<strong>in</strong>ly caused by <strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong> team sport<br />

and its typical one-to-situations. By specific type <strong>of</strong> ball sports <strong>the</strong> rank<strong>in</strong>g is: Soccer<br />

(74%), Basketball (8%), Volleyball (7%), and Handball (3%). The majority <strong>of</strong> sports<br />

<strong>in</strong>juries result from participation <strong>in</strong> non-organized sports accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> EU IDB<br />

records (Table/figure 9).
