inhabitants <strong>of</strong> tiiese vdlages arrived by canoe at <strong>Tobelo</strong> (some<br />

70 miles to <strong>the</strong> north), <strong>the</strong>y seldom referred to tiieir village<br />

names, but ra<strong>the</strong>r said, in <strong>the</strong>ir distinctive dialect, tiiat <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

from "o todingana" (i.e., "Dodinga" in tiiis wide sense). This<br />

perhaps explains why Hueting called die dialect <strong>the</strong> "Dodinga"<br />

dialect, and for convenience I shall use that designation here.<br />

<strong>The</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn boundary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Boeng (B) dialect, on <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn peninsula <strong>of</strong> Halmahera, may roughly be drawn at die<br />

present border between <strong>the</strong> Kao and <strong>Tobelo</strong> districts (see Map<br />

1). It was thus drawn by Hueting (1921) and is still recognized<br />

locally today. Throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tobelo</strong>-Boeng-speaking regions,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Tobelo</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area north <strong>of</strong> this are referred to as <strong>Tobelo</strong><br />
