reported that <strong>the</strong>y suffer from periodic long term shortages of irrigation water (cf. Fig.<br />

5.36). People try to cope with <strong>the</strong> situation by us<strong>in</strong>g tube wells, but although tube well<br />

irrigation is adequate for <strong>the</strong> germ<strong>in</strong>ation of rice seeds, it does not provide <strong>the</strong> water<br />

quality needed to allow rice to mature as <strong>the</strong> groundwater is too salty. The great<br />

dependency on only one harvest per year <strong>in</strong> an area where normally two harvests are<br />

possible leads to economic <strong>in</strong>stability for farm<strong>in</strong>g households, which is why villagers are<br />

forced to search additional <strong>in</strong>come, e.g. such as urban construction workers or as<br />

sharecropper for bigger landowners. Additional <strong>in</strong>come is also generated by many women<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> settlement who contribute to <strong>the</strong> production of S<strong>in</strong>dhi caps (cf. Fig.5.40).<br />
