Canada: Independent council for quality improvement
in health care
At a health ministers’ meeting in September 2003, the federal
and provincial governments agreed to establish a national-level
Quality Council modeled after that in Saskatchewan Province.
Nomination of council members began in October 2003.
The council consists of health policy experts, government
officials and representatives of the public. Its principal goal is to
improve the health status of the Canadian population. To this
end, the council offers advisory services concerning health reform
issues, financing, health care supply and other topics vital to the
health care system. In one key task, the council reports to the
public on the performance of the health care system. The council
provides those who shape health policy decisions the resources to
do so in more transparent and evidence-based ways. Its efficacy
will depend primarily on whether it gives priority to the interests
and health status of the Canadian population.
