POWER STEERING
MOTOR INSPECTION
PROCEDURE
Read the value using intelligent
tester (motor voltage):
MOTOR ROTATION
ANGLE SENSOR
MALFUNCTION
If a power steering motor
angle sensor problem occurs, the
trouble area will be in the steering
column assembly or the power
steering ECU.
Check the installation condition
of the motor rotation angle sensor
connection.
Verify that its connector
is securely
connected to the
power steering ECU.
Check for DTCs
again. If a DTC is still
present, connect
the intelligent tester
(with CAN VIM) to
the DLC3. Turn the ignition ON
and press the intelligent tester
main switch ON.
Select the item “MOTOR RO-
TATE” in the data list and observe
the value displayed on the
tester.
During steering operation, motor
rotation angle values should
change from 0 to 360 degrees.
If this range is not observed,
replace the steering column assembly.
If the DTC remains and the specifi
ed angle values were observed,
replace the EPS ECU.
PROBLEM SYMPTOMS
Heavy steering:
• Front tires improperly infl ated
and/or unevenly worn.
• Incorrect front wheel alignment.
• Lower ball joint(s) worn or damaged.
• Steering gear assembly worn or
damaged.
• Power steering motor fault.
• Power source voltage of the EPS
ECU.
• EPS ECU.
Steering eff ort diff ers between
turning right and left, or steering
eff ort uneven:
• Front tires improperly infl ated or
worn.
• Incorrect front wheel alignment.
• Lower ball joint(s).
• Steering gear assembly.
• Torque sensor (built into steering
column).
• Steering column assembly.
• Power steering motor.
• EPS ECU.
