The shock absorbers are plumbed for oil. The
shocks mount to the frame and rear axle assembly
in a traditional manner, with a top
stud and lower eyelet.
The air suspension fuse and relay are located
in the engine bay.
likelihood of oil leakage from the joints.
SERVICING THE CENTER CONTROL
ABSORBER
It’s important to avoid bending or kinking the tubes
during service of the center control absorber and/or shock
absorbers.
Whenever loosening or tightening the tube joints, hold
the mating hex while turning only the joint hex.
When installing the joints, tighten to achieve a gap of
0.04 in. (1.0mm) between the joint and the mating hex. The
reference torque value is 18 ft.-lbs. (25 N-m).
Do not disturb the smaller tube fl are nuts at any tube-tojoint
connections or where the short tube attaches to the
top of the control absorber with a fl are nut.
REAR AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM
The optional rear air suspension system features pneumatic
air cylinders positioned between the frame and the
rear axle housing. These air cylinders are controlled to adjust
the rear vehicle height depending on load conditions.
A dedicated ECU monitors engine speed, vehicle speed and
vehicle height.
SERVICING THE REAR AIR CYLINDERS
Raise the vehicle and support the frame with stands.
Allow the rear axle assembly to lower (do not support the
rear axle assembly). The rear shock absorbers must remain
connected.
Disconnect the height control tube. (Refer to Toyota
practices which are critical in terms of maintaining
wheel alignment.)
Remove the retaining clip on the top of the air cylinder.
If the clip cannot be removed easily, thread a wire through
the hole in the clip’s lip and pull the clip out.
Discharge the air from the pneumatic cylinder assembly
in order to retract the cylinder.
Rotate the pneumatic cylinder 90 degrees clockwise (as
viewed from above) and remove the cylinder.
NOTE: If the cylinder is to be reused, two new O-rings, a
new plate and height control plug must be installed during
reassembly. Coat the O-rings with MP grease.
