<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational humanitarian<br />

law <strong>in</strong>to academic syllabuses;<br />

and progress <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region as<br />

regards <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> this<br />

law, more particularly <strong>the</strong> punishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> war crimes.<br />

Moreover, on February 3rd, 200 ,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> on Juridical and<br />

Political Affairs organized a work<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Court which became a forum<br />

to clarify a number <strong>of</strong> questions<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

Crim<strong>in</strong>al Court, specifically<br />

Member States’ cooperation with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Court, and <strong>the</strong> immunity agreements.<br />

Also, <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g underscored<br />

<strong>the</strong> need to adapt national<br />

crim<strong>in</strong>al laws to effectively enforce<br />

<strong>the</strong> mechanism <strong>of</strong> complementarity<br />

provided for <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rome Statute.<br />

The meet<strong>in</strong>g was attended by<br />

a high <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

Crim<strong>in</strong>al Court, representatives<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Coalition for an <strong>International</strong><br />

Crim<strong>in</strong>al Court, government<br />

experts and <strong>the</strong> ICRC.<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

Legal Affairs<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g 200 , this Department was<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> most efforts <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />

promote <strong>in</strong>ternational humanitarian<br />

law at <strong>the</strong> OAS level, supplied<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion and fostered several<br />

activities related to this topic.<br />

It cooperated significantly <strong>in</strong> or-<br />

ganiz<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong> special session<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> on Juridical and<br />

Political Affairs held on February<br />

2nd, 200 , and <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Court on February 3rd. Moreover,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> Inter-American<br />

Juridical <strong>Committee</strong>, it encouraged<br />

a class on <strong>in</strong>ternational humanitarian<br />

law dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> XXXIII course on<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational law held <strong>in</strong> Rio de Janeiro<br />

on July 31st - August 25th this<br />

year. This course, held s<strong>in</strong>ce 19 3,<br />

is addressed to young pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

from <strong>the</strong> OAS Member States who<br />

work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> law and <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

relations.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, it is worth not<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

through <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Legal Cooperation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

Legal Affairs makes available<br />

to <strong>the</strong> public a section with<strong>in</strong> its<br />

Web page devoted to <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

humanitarian law. Here, it is possible<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion on OAS<br />

treaties and resolutions on this<br />

law, documents issued by <strong>the</strong> special<br />

sessions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> on<br />

Juridical and Political Affairs that<br />

dealt with this law, a table with <strong>the</strong><br />

national committees for <strong>the</strong> implementation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational humanitarian<br />

law, l<strong>in</strong>ks to databases with<br />

national legislation on <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

humanitarian law developed by <strong>the</strong><br />

ICRC and full <strong>text</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reports<br />

from expert meet<strong>in</strong>gs organized by<br />
