The mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICRC<br />

The <strong>International</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> (ICRC) is an impartial,<br />

neutral and <strong>in</strong>dependent organization whose exclusively humanitarian<br />

mission is to protect <strong>the</strong> lives and dignity <strong>of</strong> victims <strong>of</strong> war<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ternal violence and to provide <strong>the</strong>m with assistance. It directs<br />

and coord<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational relief activities conducted by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> and <strong>Red</strong> Crescent Movement <strong>in</strong> situations<br />

<strong>of</strong> conflict. It also endeavours to prevent suffer<strong>in</strong>g by promot<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g humanitarian law and universal humanitarian pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />

Established <strong>in</strong> 1863, <strong>the</strong> ICRC is at <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Movement.
