Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Gib Akin, Mary Jo Hatch, and Larry Pettit Retire<br />
AFTeR A COMBINeD 77 years at<br />
<strong>McIntire</strong>, Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Gib Akin, Mary Jo<br />
hatch, and Larry Pettit have retired as<br />
<strong>of</strong> the end <strong>of</strong> the spring <strong>2007</strong> semester.<br />
“Gib, Mary Jo, and Larry have all been<br />
outstanding members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>McIntire</strong><br />
community,” says <strong>McIntire</strong> Dean Carl<br />
Zeithaml. “Their vision, dedication, and<br />
many contributions were significant<br />
factors in <strong>McIntire</strong>’s success over the<br />
years.”<br />
Gib Akin, who joined <strong>McIntire</strong> in<br />
1976, specialized in organizational behavior.<br />
he taught courses in interpersonal<br />
and small group dynamics, as well as in<br />
cultural approaches to organizational<br />
analysis and change. he also taught<br />
qualitative research methods in the Sociology<br />
Department and supervised doctoral<br />
research in management, sociology,<br />
psychology, and education. Akin acted as<br />
a consultant to numerous organizations,<br />

including DuPont and Westinghouse,<br />
and served as Associate editor <strong>of</strong> Journal<br />
<strong>of</strong> Management Education.<br />
Mary Jo hatch, also an expert in<br />
organizational behavior, joined <strong>McIntire</strong><br />
in 2000. hatch previously served on<br />
the faculties <strong>of</strong> Cranfield University, in<br />
the United Kingdom, and the Copenhagen<br />
Business <strong>School</strong>, in Denmark.<br />
At <strong>McIntire</strong>, she conducted research<br />
in organization theory; organizational<br />
culture, identity, and image; corporate<br />
branding; organizational symbolism; and<br />
leadership. hatch’s research appeared<br />
in such journals as Academy <strong>of</strong> Management<br />
Review and Harvard Business<br />
Review. She also published several books,<br />
including The Three Faces <strong>of</strong> Leadership:<br />
Manager, Artist, Priest (Blackwell, 2005).<br />
With <strong>McIntire</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tom Bateman,<br />
hatch also helped to spearhead the UVA<br />
LeAD program.<br />
Larry Pettit joined <strong>McIntire</strong> in 1968 and<br />
is perhaps best known for his challenging<br />
“GDP” class (Comm 478), which<br />
he taught for more than 30 years. Upon<br />
joining <strong>McIntire</strong>, Pettit taught both<br />
quantitative methods and corporate<br />
finance courses. In an early curriculum<br />
revision, he designed and instituted the<br />
required case course (Comm 372). Pettit<br />
also designed and organized <strong>McIntire</strong>’s<br />
first international finance course (Comm<br />
474), which was taught in London,<br />
Zurich, and Paris. he also served as<br />
Area Coordinator for a number <strong>of</strong> years,<br />
adding several new courses, including<br />
venture capital and fixed income.<br />
A banking specialist, Pettit served as a<br />
consultant to international banks, major<br />
American banks, and community banks.<br />
In addition to teaching in the National<br />
Banking <strong>School</strong>, which he helped<br />
develop for the AICPA in 1979, Pettit
