4 (Excellent)
Rubric for the Assessment of Performance in Spanish
The student fully achieves all Spanish and project goals. The presentation demonstrates clear
thinking and explanation. The student brings additional linguistic material to the basic situation,
for example, using new functions or structures that beginning language learners seldom use
spontaneously.
3 (Good)
The student substantially achieves the Spanish and project goals. The main thrust of the project
and the Spanish behind it is understood, but there may be some minor misunderstanding of
content or weakness in presentation. That is, the student is able to communicate effectively in
spite of these errors and offers meaningful responses.
2 (Fair)
The student partially achieves the Spanish and project goals. A limited grasp of the main
Spanish ideas or project requirement is demonstrated. Some of the work may be incomplete,
misdirected, or unclear. The student demonstrates minimum oral competence, hesitates
frequently, and shows little creativity, offering only minimal, predictable responses.
1 (Poor)
The student makes little progress toward accomplishing the goals of the project because of lack
of understanding or lack of effort. The student fails to demonstrate acceptable mastery of
functions, vocabulary, and grammatical concepts.
0 (Unacceptable)
Communication is nonexistent. The student does not understand the aural cues and is unable to
accomplish the task. Errors are so extreme that communication is not possible.
