Cáncer es el término empleado p<strong>ar</strong>a <strong>de</strong>sign<strong>ar</strong> más <strong>de</strong> 100 formas diferentes <strong>de</strong> esta enfermedad originada<br />
en distintos órganos y tejidos <strong>de</strong>l cuerpo, a pes<strong>ar</strong> <strong>de</strong> esta diversidad la mayoría <strong>com</strong>p<strong>ar</strong>ten las mismas bases<br />
molecul<strong>ar</strong>es y genéticas que les dan origen. Los diferentes tipos <strong>de</strong> células cancerosas poseen c<strong>ar</strong>acterísticas<br />
fenotípicas en <strong>com</strong>ún tales <strong>com</strong>o: el crecimiento irrestricto por el cual las células neoplásicas proliferan en forma<br />
autónoma y anárquica ignorando los controles que normalmente regulan el ciclo celul<strong>ar</strong>, poseen inmortalidad y<br />
a<strong>de</strong>más, gozan <strong>de</strong> ciertas propieda<strong>de</strong>s que están estrechamente relacionadas con el c<strong>ar</strong>ácter letal <strong>de</strong> muchas<br />
formas <strong>de</strong> cáncer tales <strong>com</strong>o la capacidad <strong>de</strong> invadir los tejidos y emigr<strong>ar</strong> a sitios distantes generando tumores<br />
secund<strong>ar</strong>ios conocidos <strong>com</strong>o metástasis. En el cáncer el acúmulo <strong>de</strong>sorganizado <strong>de</strong> células se pue<strong>de</strong> producir por<br />
dos mecanismos: por una <strong>de</strong>sregulación <strong>de</strong>l ciclo celul<strong>ar</strong> o porque las células que tendrían que haber muerto <strong>de</strong><br />
forma natural no lo hicieron por una <strong>de</strong>sregulación en el proceso apoptótico. Estos conceptos nos presentan una<br />
nueva visión <strong>de</strong> la génesis <strong>de</strong>l cáncer según el cual existirían dos vías o caminos que conducen al <strong>de</strong>s<strong>ar</strong>rollo <strong>de</strong> una<br />
neoplasia: ya sea por un aumento en el número <strong>de</strong> células que proliferan o por una disminución en el número <strong>de</strong><br />
células que <strong>de</strong>berían morir por apoptosis, pero esta dicotomía no es estricta y en muchas formas <strong>de</strong> cáncer ambos<br />
procesos se superponen.<br />
Otro aspecto importante es el proceso <strong>de</strong> c<strong>ar</strong>cinogénesis el cuál es muy <strong>com</strong>plejo y presenta v<strong>ar</strong>ias facetas:<br />
• La c<strong>ar</strong>cinogénesis (proceso por el cuál una célula normal se convierte en una célula transformada)<br />
requiere <strong>de</strong> mucho tiempo y en el caso <strong>de</strong>l cáncer <strong>de</strong> cuello uterino se estima que se necesit<strong>ar</strong>ían v<strong>ar</strong>ios<br />
años e inclusive décadas.<br />
• El proceso <strong>de</strong> c<strong>ar</strong>cinogénesis se realiza <strong>com</strong>o en la mayoría <strong>de</strong> las formas <strong>de</strong> cáncer en múltiples etapas<br />
tanto <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> el punto <strong>de</strong> vista genotípico <strong>com</strong>o fenotípico.<br />
• Se necesitan en general <strong>de</strong> v<strong>ar</strong>ias mutaciones genéticas p<strong>ar</strong>a convertir una célula normal en una célula<br />
cancerosa.<br />
• Las mutaciones <strong>de</strong>ben afect<strong>ar</strong> a genes específicos relacionados con el <strong>de</strong>s<strong>ar</strong>rollo <strong>de</strong>l cáncer ya sea<br />
llevando a un aumento <strong>de</strong> su función (oncogenes) o a una pérdida <strong>de</strong> la misma (genes supresores <strong>de</strong><br />
tumor).<br />
• Cambios epigenéticos y la p<strong>ar</strong>ticipación <strong>de</strong> microRNAs son también importantes en el <strong>de</strong>s<strong>ar</strong>rollo <strong>de</strong>l<br />
cáncer.<br />
