scheme utilized on the original map. On some maps, the legend
items are identified by letters rather than numbers, and still other
maps have no numbering system of any kind. The uniform numbering
system used in this bibliography makes the legends more
directly comparable. Where legends are complex, Roman numerals
and capital letters permit appropriate groupings whereas lower
case letters indicate subdivisions of the numbered items.
Author and bibliographic reference
The name of the author of a vegetation map is given as fully
as possible. In some instances, the first name or names are given
in full even though only initials are used on the map. The
draftsman is not considered to be the author.
If the author of a vegetation map is not identified on the map
or in an accompanying text, then the author of the text in which
the map appears is considered to be the author of the map as well.
In some cases, no author is given as for instance when the map is
prepared by a government agency. In such cases, the author is
listed as anonymous.
The date following the author's name is the publication date,
normally taken from the map itself or from the title page of
the book or journal in which the map appears.
After the date, there follows a standard bibliographic citation
of the book or journal in which the map is published, made up
of title, place of publication and publisher for books, or title and
volume for journals. The indicated page (or pages) refers to
the position of the map and not to that of the article in which
the map appears.
Reprinted
maps
When a published vegetation map is republished in a different
publication, it is listed as a reprint in a note following the bibliographic
entry of the original map, even though it may have been
redrawn, done at a different scale and/or printed in different
colors. Such a reproduction is listed in the same manner as the
preceding bibliographic entry, prefaced by "Reprinted."
