SOUTH AMERICA
4. Thorn and succulent savannas. Open xerophytic formations. Torch cacti,
shrubs and small trees, mostly spiny and deciduous, partly evergreen
(Capparidaceae, lacquina) in low, open stand of grass
5. Ground water woodlands of Algarrobo (Prosopis juliflora) mostly cleared
for cultivation
6. Limit of the xerophytic zone
B. Mesophytic (tropophytic) Savanna Lands
7. Grass savannas with scattered arborescent plants ("Sabana") predominantly
on flat, clayey alluvial soils
8. Drought-deciduous savanna forests and woodlands (Savanna forests) with
water-storing and hardwood trees (Bombacaceae, Anacardiaceae, Bignoniaceae,
Cochlospermum etc.)
9. Flooded savannas like 7 but abundantly interspersed with swamp and
aquatic formations ("Tembladeras")
10. Deciduous savanna forests with frequent mists (garúas) during the dry
season. Like 7 but with plentiful epiphytes (lichens, Tillandsias, Peperomias,
Orchis, Araceas etc.)
11. Evergreen riverine and ground water forests in the savanna belt, mostly
replaced by cultivated land
C. Hygrophytic Forests
12. Ombrophilous evergreen forests with palm trees, Cecropia, Ficus, bamboos,
Ochroma (Palo de balsa), Gynnerium; no or not simultaneous fall
of the foliage
13. Evergreen forests like 12 but produced by the combination of zenithal
rains in summer and heavy mists (garua) in winter
14. Ombrophilous swamp forests (Cañaverales, Bambudales, Palmichales,
Guandales)
15. Transitional semideciduous forests with foliage reduction during 2-3
months, without hygrophytes like Ochroma, Carludovia, Phytelephas,
Cecropia, but Ficus, palm trees and some mesophytic elements (Bombacaceae,
Cochlospermum, Cereus pitahaya)
D. Halophytic Formations
16. Mangrove forests, predominantly Rhizophora in the drier southern coasts,
floristically richer toward the wet northern coastal regions
