may be published long after they were compiled and this difference
becomes apparent when the reader compares the date of
mapping with the date of publication. When both are the same,
it may be assumed that it was not possible to determine the
time of mapping.
The
color
The color follows the title on the left side of the page. Many
maps are printed in black on white paper; they are described as
"black and white." A few maps are printed in two colors, usually
in black and red or black and green etc. The color of such maps
is described as "black, red and white" or "black, green and white."
When more colors are used, the map is described as "in color."
The scale
The scale of all vegetation maps listed here is written as a
fraction, e.g. 1:200,000. It follows the map title on the right side
of the page. If the scale was originally given in a verbal form,
e.g. 1 inch equals 4 miles, or in a linear form, then such scales
have been changed into fractional forms. The fractional form
offers the great advantage of making the scale of all maps directly
comparable. A few maps have no indication of a scale and arc
of areas which can not be located readily on other available maps.
The scale is then given as "incalculable."
The
legend
The legend items are given as printed on the original vegetation
map except that only the first word, places names, generic
plant names and similar words are capitalized, and all scientific
plant names are italicized. The legend is presented in full in so
far as it pertains to vegetation or the absence of vegetation (e.g.
bare rock, glaciers etc.). Legend items pertaining to roads,
political boundaries, topography, geology or cultural features are
ignored.
In this bibliography, the legend items are numbered consecutively.
This is done for the convenience of the user so that the
detail of various maps can be compared more readily, and so that
the legend items of any given map will appear more distinctly.
The numbers do not necessarily correspond to the numbering
