Introduction
Definition of a vegetation map
For the purpose of this bibliography, a vegetation map is
considered as a map on which natural and semi-natural vegetation
is indicated. Certain specialized maps such as land-use maps
or timber stand maps are included if they contain pertinent
vegetation units.
Plan of description.
Each map is described as follows:
1. The title of the map, the date of preparation, the color and the
scale. These items are always at the head of the description.
2. The legend follows the above items and is presented in the
original language.
3. The author of the vegetation map, and when and where it
was published. These items always follow the legend and
form the final part of the description.
Every vegetation map listed in this bibliography is described
in this manner, and this uniformity allows the reader to find
quickly whatever information he may be seeking. The inclusion
of the entire legend obviates further annotation: the legend will
tell a reader at a glance whether a given vegetation map will
serve his particular purpose or not.
Only published maps are included in this bibliography.
The
map title
The map title is given as printed on the face of the original
vegetation map. If the map has no title, then a descriptive title
was extracted from either the legend or an accompanying text.
The
date
The date which appears to the left of the map title is the
year in which the map was prepared, i.e. the time of mapping,
the time of doing field investigations or the year in which the
aerial photographs were taken that served as a basis for the map.
Sometimes, but not always, this date is printed on the map.
Where the time of mapping is not given and cannot be derived
from a text, the date of mapping is replaced by the date of publication.
The latter is always given below the author's name. Maps
