The International Colloquium on Vegetation Mapping held
at Toulouse, France, in 1960 determined upon the production
of an international bibliography of vegetation maps, and overall
preparation of such a bibliography was entrusted to me. Since
that time, the International Bibliography of Vegetation Maps
(IBVM) has been published in four volumes: 1: North America
(1965), 2: Europe (1966), 3: USSR, Asia and Australia (1968),
and 4: Africa, South America and World (1970).
Of course, further vegetation maps are being published more
or less continually, and older ones that had been omitted have
since come to light. The inevitable gaps appeared most serious
in the case of South America, and this volume (designated
"IBVM, 2nd ed., Section 1" in an attempt to avoid undue confusion)
devoted exclusively to that continent, seeks to remedy
that weakness. This volume contains the South American material
published in the IBVM, vol. IV and, in addition, the material
that has become available in the meantime. As a result,
the number of listed vegetation maps is increased substantially,
as is the usefulness of the bibliography to the researcher. It is an
added advantage and a great convenience to have all South
American vegetation maps listed in a single volume rather than
having to search for some of them in the earlier volume.
Omissions and errors are unavoidable, even though this bibliography
has been prepared with the greatest care. As in the past,
therefore, readers are urgently requested to notify me of any
errors they may find in this volume and of all published vegetation
maps that may have been omitted here or that may have
been published later. I shall be most grateful to them.
Many friends and colleagues have helped in compiling volume
V of the IBVM, and it is quite impossible to list them here by
