used here are the de facto boundaries existing in 1979, even
though the validity of some of these may have been challenged
by one country or another.
The order of arrangement is simple enough: it begins with
the vegetation maps of the entire continent of South America
and of particular sections thereof. Such sections are always areas
covering parts or all of more than one country. Hereafter, the
vegetation maps are arranged by country, and the countries are
presented in alphabetical order.
Within each country, the maps are arranged in chronological
order according to the time of mapping. This time (year) always
precedes the title of the map. Within any given year, the maps
are arranged by scale, beginning with maps of the smallest scales
that cover the largest areas, and ending with maps of the largest
scales. Thus, the maps for a particular year are grouped in
descending order of areal inclusiveness.
