Abstract:
To most teachers, nursery rhymes still remain untrodden ground, overlooking the enormous
teaching potential that these cute, often irreverent poems and songs may have in the language
class. It will be the purpose of the workshop a) to acquaint teachers with counting-out, cumulative
and narrative rhymes, fingerplays, lullabies, limericks, etc. b) to show how, owing to their
repetitive pattern, they’re ideal to help students internalize lexical items and patterns; c) to use
the rhymes as springboards for creative writing activities even for early stage students.
A revaluation of the genre will entail an appreciation of the intrinsic literary value of nursery
rhymes. When choosing to deal with them in class, teachers are resorting to authentic material
which will help students get the feel of the pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of English
through entertaining classroom experiences.
