Abstract:<br />

To most teachers, nursery rhymes still remain untrodd<strong>en</strong> ground, overlooking the <strong>en</strong>ormous<br />

teaching pot<strong>en</strong>tial that these cute, oft<strong>en</strong> irrever<strong>en</strong>t poems and songs may have in the <strong>la</strong>nguage<br />

c<strong>la</strong>ss. It will be the purpose of the workshop a) to acquaint teachers with counting-out, cumu<strong>la</strong>tive<br />

and narrative rhymes, fingerp<strong>la</strong>ys, lul<strong>la</strong>bies, limericks, etc. b) to show how, owing to their<br />

repetitive pattern, they’re ideal to help stud<strong>en</strong>ts internalize lexical items and patterns; c) to use<br />

the rhymes as springboards for creative writing activities ev<strong>en</strong> for early stage stud<strong>en</strong>ts.<br />

A revaluation of the g<strong>en</strong>re will <strong>en</strong>tail an appreciation of the intrinsic literary value of nursery<br />

rhymes. Wh<strong>en</strong> choosing to deal with them in c<strong>la</strong>ss, teachers are resorting to auth<strong>en</strong>tic material<br />

which will help stud<strong>en</strong>ts get the feel of the pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of English<br />

through <strong>en</strong>tertaining c<strong>la</strong>ssroom experi<strong>en</strong>ces.<br />
