Include Literature in your classes: It helps to boost creativity, develop intercultural awareness,
have fun & learn English. Can we do all this
Disertante: Lic. Griselda Beacon
Destinado a: Profesores de inglés de grados superiores de la Escuela Primaria
Idioma: Inglés
Sede: Arlene Fern - Arribeños 1300, CABA.
Abstract:
The learning of foreign languages allows us to communicate with others in an international
context and, as a result, makes us face otherness –and consequently difference. In turn, this
learning experience makes us reflect upon the culture/s languages are immersed in and look at
ourselves to “see” our own culture with renewed eyes. This double perspective contributes to help
us develop an intercultural awareness. Needless to say, the learning of foreign languages is
complex and requires that teachers juggle with a variety of strategies to help learners develop
linguistic competence and a sense of cultural awareness that will lead to linguistic appropriacy in
an intercultural contact.
This workshop intends to offer teachers the opportunity to reflect upon their teaching practices as
well as to provide them with didactic tools to use literature in their classes. We will design possible
teaching sequences that trigger textual intervention, creative writing tasks and allow learners to
experiment with the foreign language(s). Poems, short stories and other artistic expressions
become our teaching content so as to enhance our students´ motivation in learning a foreign
language, foster reading for pleasure, and have fun.
