Desde que, mediada la década de los 90, David Fonseca se dio a conocer como un imaginativo creador de canciones pop, no ha cejado en su empeño de labrarse un lugar privilegiado como solista en la escena musical portuguesa. Cada vez más cerca del mainstream angloamericano, este cantante incluye en su último álbum un rosario de canciones <strong>int</strong>erpretadas en un perfecto inglés, señal inequívoca de sus ambiciones cosmopolitas. Hablamos del temario del disco “Dreams in colour”, publicado en el mes de octubre del pasado año y convertido en inmediato éxito de ventas y crítica en <strong>Portugal</strong>. El detalle confirma que el estatus alcanzado por David Fonseca, vocalista, compositor e <strong>int</strong>érprete de 34 años de edad es uno de los más espectaculares que conoce en los últimos tiempos el circuito musical luso. Dotado de un sentido melódico asombroso y con una mano izquierda verdaderamente privilegiada para los arreglos, David vive el acto creativo con una <strong>int</strong>ensidad encomiable. Su primera banda, Silence 4, ya obtuvo, finalizando la década de los 90, una espléndida respuesta popular en su país. Los desarrollos instrumentales más inesperados se cruzaban en canciones de una delicadeza extrema en el disco “Silence becomes it”, de 1998, mientras que, en otros temas, la visceralidad era la nota dominante. “Silence becomes it” consiguió vender 240.000 copias, cifra que, además de proporcionar a la banda seis discos de platino, alfombró el camino de facilidades para que en 2000 grabasen su segundo álbum, “Only pain is real”. El trabajo supuso un nuevo éxito de ventas y embarcó a Silence 4 en una apretada gira repleta de parabienes críticos, antes de que en 2002 sus componentes decidiesen poner fin de común acuerdo a sus actividades como grupo. El año siguiente marcó el debut de David Fonseca en solitario. El culpable fue el temario del disco “Sing me something new”, producido por David y Mário Barreiros y masterizado en Nueva York por George Marino, responsable de grabaciones para artistas como Coldplay, Rollins Band, Dandy Warhols, Sepultura o el guitarrista Marc Ribot. “Sing me something new” revelaba, según el propio David, su admiración por cantautores como el malogrado Jeff Buckley o Tom Waits, aunque, en realidad, despedía un saludable regusto sonoro por los logros de formaciones como Cars, The Cure y Roxy Music. Idéntica inspiración acusó su posterior disco de 2005, “Our hearts will beat as one”, registrado inmediatamente después de la colaboración prestada en el supergrupo portugués Humanos, con el que, junto a Manuela Azevedo y el fadista Camané, entre otros, David rindió homenaje al compositor y cantante de los años 80 António Variações. Los éxitos y un prestigio incontestable como compositor preceden a este artista especializado en elaborar un pop fresco y de contundente pegada comercial. El álbum “Dreams in colour” es un tratado de amorología selecta hacia varios de los más grandes creadores del género. En la materialización de estas canciones medra, sobre todo, la identificable identidad de Bryan Ferry, sin llegar a traspasar la odiosa barrera de las imitaciones. Pero, atención: si una de sus citas es Ferry, la otra podría ser Robert Smith, el cantante de The Cure, en el punto de tensión expresiva sobre el que David se mueve en la efusividad de aquel.
