Keys words: Pastures degraded, Local Knowledge, Decision making, Land tenancy SUMMARY In Petén, Guatemala, cattle farmers perceive that pastures have been decreasing its productive capacity resulting to the reduction of the productivity of the farm in general. Technically this process is known as the degradation of pasture. There are a number of technical studies undertaken to solve this issue but usually local people’s knowledge is totally ignored. The knowledge on degraded pastures is important to integrate it any development plans and projects to have a more sustainable impacts. This study was undertaken in 2004 (from February to August) in eight communities of 56 farmers in Petén, Guatemala, Numerous methodologies were used in collecting the information that included: semistructured interviews, farm visits, informal meetings with focal groups, aerial photographs, focus group discussion, and participant observation. Two tables (improved species and natural grass) were formulated describing different levels of pasture degradation and were used to compare and analyze farmers local knowledge. Land tenancy was the main variable used in the analysis but also taking into account other parameters such as gender, educational level in some aspects. The results show that the knowledge were similar between the two groups and among communities and that farmer’s parameters in evaluating degraded pasture is very similar to that of the technical people. In evaluating the paddocks, both farmers and technicians agree that there are different levels of degradation although farmers tend to have fewer levels, excluding the extreme condition. Livestock farmers emphasize that there are a number of factors affecting the degradation of the pasture including that of bad management. Although not clearly shown but the two cases studies presented in the study also try to capture this idea. The case studies relate some socio-economic and biophysical factors influencing the decision made by the family members in managing their farms. The results also show that farmers seem to have a high knowledge of trees on pastures as well as their particular uses in the farms, depending on their economic status.
