IP (Internet Pro<strong>to</strong>col) Address<br />

A unique number that devices use in order <strong>to</strong> identify and communicate with each o<strong>the</strong>r on a network utilizing<br />

<strong>the</strong> Internet Pro<strong>to</strong>col standard, such as “192.168.1.xxx”. No duplicate numbers are allowed within <strong>the</strong> network.<br />

LAN Cable<br />

A cable that has an eight-pin modular plug on each end and is different from a telephone plug which has four<br />

pins. A straight cable is used when connecting <strong>the</strong> flat panel TV <strong>to</strong> a home network via a hub. A cross-over cable<br />

is used when connecting directly <strong>to</strong> a PC. Use category 5 (CAT-5) LAN cables.<br />

MAC (Media Access Control) Address<br />

An address attached <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> port of any network device with an IP address. The MAC address is expressed as<br />

“00:e0:36:01:23:xx” and cannot be changed.<br />

Mass S<strong>to</strong>rage Class Devices<br />

The standard provides an interface <strong>to</strong> a variety of s<strong>to</strong>rage devices, such as USB flash drive and digital cameras.<br />

PlaysForSure<br />

PlaysForSure is a marketing certification given by Microsoft. This unit complies with PlaysForSure Version 2.20<br />

Requirements Specification for Network Devices.<br />

PTP (Picture Transfer Pro<strong>to</strong>col)<br />

A pro<strong>to</strong>col that allows <strong>the</strong> transfer of images and manipulation of digital cameras through USB connection. Most<br />

recent digital cameras and o<strong>the</strong>r devices support PTP allowing <strong>the</strong> transfer of images through direct connections.<br />

Subnet Mask<br />

Used <strong>to</strong> determine <strong>the</strong> network when IP addresses are broken in<strong>to</strong> several parts. It is expressed as<br />

“255.255.255.0”. In most cases, <strong>the</strong> Subnet mask is au<strong>to</strong>matically assigned by <strong>the</strong> DHCP server.<br />

UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)<br />

Architecture for pervasive peer-<strong>to</strong>-peer network connectivity of devices of all form fac<strong>to</strong>rs. It is designed <strong>to</strong> bring<br />

easy-<strong>to</strong>-use, flexible, standard based connectivity <strong>to</strong> ad-hoc or unmanaged networks whe<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> home, in a<br />

small business, public spaces, or attached <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Internet.<br />

USB (Universal Serial Bus)<br />

USB provides a serial bus standard for connecting devices, usually <strong>to</strong> computers such as PCs. The flat panel TV<br />

supports <strong>the</strong> Mass S<strong>to</strong>rage Class and PTP (Picture Transfer Pro<strong>to</strong>col) devices.<br />

Windows Media Connect<br />

Microsoft Windows Media Connect is a new technology <strong>to</strong> distribute music, pho<strong>to</strong>s and video s<strong>to</strong>red on a PC with<br />

Windows XP installed <strong>to</strong> a stereo system of TV. Using this technology you can playback files s<strong>to</strong>red on <strong>the</strong> PC from<br />

various devices wherever you like in your home.<br />

Windows Media DRM<br />

Windows Media DRM is copyright protection technology developed by Microsoft Corporation. It enables content<br />

providers <strong>to</strong> distribute over <strong>the</strong> Internet music, video and o<strong>the</strong>r digital media content in a protected, encrypted file<br />

format.<br />

Windows Media Player<br />

A free digital media player application provided by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and images on<br />

PCs.<br />

Windows Media Player 11<br />

The functionality of Windows Media Connect has been integrated in<strong>to</strong> this version of Windows Media Player. After<br />

installing Windows Media Player 11 Windows Media Connect will not function. See Microsoft’s website for<br />

details.<br />
