Dignity, Rights, Participation: Women and Civil Society EDITORIAL The Human Dignity in the Mediterranean Transition In 2011, thousands of youths from Tunisia and Egypt demonstrated in several squares of the cities in order to fight for their rights. These people have studied hard, have got a degree but they cannot find a job because of the increasing unemployment and through the social networks they are trying to fight against the corruption of the political system which still exists in their countries. This dissatisfaction of the Arab people is similar to the one expressed by the Europeans who are disappointed by the decline of democracy and a political class which is more and more distant from their ideals of justice, freedom and employment. For this reason, all the youths of the Mediterranean area are united by the same situation and dissatisfaction which strengthens their relationship. This battle is not easy because at the moment the young generation of these countries are going through a complex moment of “transition”. The transition doe not only refer to the people fighting for their civil rights but also for the economical and financial crisis. The core reason for which people are fighting is that they wish to have a better society and they went to reclaim their dignity which is the basic condition of every human being. However, we must remember that when talking about human dignity, our minds should think of all the women who are still fighting for their rights in Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Bahrain, Algeria, Yemen and Morocco. THE MEDITERRANEAN IS "UNCERTAINTY" Dominique Bendo-Soupou Maria Donzelli Translation: Tina Trodella If we try to fully penetrate the wisdom of African and Asian traditional cultures in the field of astrology, we would find that one of the characteristics of the Mediterranean sea is "uncertainty". Moreover, this could be used as well to refer to other Mediterranean Seas, which geographers and scholars of geopolitics detect in regions such as the Caribbean Sea or the Southern China Sea. They are similar to the sea lying in the middle of the earth under different points of view, particularly with respect to the conflict situations whose danger cannot be ignored as they can no more be interpreted through the ideological and strategic logic underlying the bipolar system. With no doubt, events occurring in North Africa concern us much more because of their geopolitical and cultural consequences in Europe. In short, the expected drift of the Arab Spring, already occurring in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Syria and in their neighbourhood countries, could give rise to a series of sprawl civil wars that would be to destabilize Europe. As Europe is scourged by the economic and financial crisis, it could have difficulties in coping with their backlash. This crisis is leading to the decline Europeans have long been speaking about, in the last years. Violent demonstrations of indignados, that Europe refuses to assimilate to the Arab youth protagonist of street uprisings, can be considered a reaction to this feared decline? Nov.12/Fév.13
In the past, Europe went through its spring. After this historical phase, it will probably go through its fall or even its winter, as the Arab World. These two worlds share the current crisis, the ambiguity and the uncertainty now scourging the Mediterranean. Translation: Laura Punzo CHALLENGES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN TRANSITION Giulia D’Argenio As the Arab Spring spread all over the Mediterranean and the Indignados Movement fired European streets protesting against austerity and the supremacy of financial markets, a new actor seemed breaking into world politics: civil society. And then? Then silence has fallen. The Arab Autumn has ousted the spring and European youth continues paying too a large bill to the economic crisis. Europe has been able to face neither its internal nor the external crisis it has been lapped by. As ever in the past, the European approach to the uprisings firing Eastern and Southern Mediterranean shores has revealed great limitations due to the overbearing of national interests over multilateral approach and cooperation. Despite extreme complexity of this strategy, multilateralism is the only way to get through divisions and to reach common objectives. Nonetheless, European Countries have not been able to define an effective response and the civil society will only succeed in its goals as a new political actor if it will be able to preserve its independence. If it will be able to create a good system of communication and horizontal cooperation protected from external interferences. The Euro-Mediterranean region is getting trough a deep crisis and a systemic transformation whose final outcomes are difficult to be forecast, in spite of all analysis scholars can do. THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMEL'S BACK Feten Fradi The murder of Chockri Belaid has shocked the whole world and confirmed that the political and social balances resulted from the Arab Springs are extremely fragile, if proofs were still needed. The journalist Feten Fradi expresses all her complaint about a confusing and troubling political and social situation threatening freedom and democracy in her country of origin. She asks Tunisian to react and respond to these dangers in order to defend the conquests achieved during the revolution against Ben Ali and his regime. She asks them to defend the freedom and the dignity they paid dearly by being vigilant on politicians and their decisions. Translation: Giulia D’Argenio A LOOK TO EGYPT, TODAY Sameh El-Tantawy In the last two months I went to Egypt on several occasions. My experience abroad has allowed me to look at changes in my country in a different way, being able to analytically evaluate events. During my last staying there, I had the opportunity to interview one of the main contemporary Egyptians writers, doctor Alaa Al-Aswani, who is an expert of political and social issues and the author of several books translated into many languages, including Italian.
