SEPTEMBRE – OCTOBRE 2010
run as an extra back to Montreal. The number of
commuters east of St. Hilaire became so few by 1968 that
the railway shortened the operation making St. Hilaire
East the last scheduled stop. The commuter train then
proceeded to Ribeco, the interlocking just east of the last
stop, crossed over to the north track, and deadheaded
back to Montreal. A reverse operation would occur for
the morning service.
Effective October 16, 1969, the Montreal-
Sherbrooke train ceased to stop at St. Hubert, St. Bruno,
St. Basile le Grand, St. Hilaire and St. Hilaire Est leaving
only the commuter train to service these stops. CN
resumed stopping the Montreal-Sherbrooke train at
these points in the early 1970s. The Montreal-
Sherbrooke trains were turned over to VIA along with the
other CN intercity passenger train in 1979. The federal
government ordered the discontinuance of the VIA
service which made its last runs in November 1981. The
CN commuter train operated until in August 1988. At the
time of its discontinuance, this train was the last regularly
scheduled Canadian National passenger train.
Hubert, Saint-Bruno, Saint-Basile-le-Grand, Saint-
The CN RDCs at St. Lambert are entraining passengers for Montreal in December 1973. This is morning train 621 that originated in
Sherbrooke and stopped on weekdays at Otterburn Park, Beloeil and St. Lambert. Cars two and three were reserved for
commuters with the overflow moving forward into car one. Michael Leduc.
Michael Leduc.
