Artiste français d’origine marocaine par son père, et espagnole par
sa mère, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou s’est choisi Bruxelles comme terre de
création depuis 2007. Le passé surréaliste de la ville s’accorde à son
sens aigu de l’absurde, où il fait se rencontrer culture arabo-musulmane
et judéo-chrétienne. Il mêle avec une ironie transgressive les codes
religieux et esthétiques de sa double identité, afin de mieux déjouer
les stéréotypes appliqués au corps, à la sexualité et à l’appartenance.
Dans cette exposition inédite issue de sa résidence à la MAAC,
Mehdi-Georges Lahlou affirme sa démarche, notamment à travers
la sculpture qui cristallise ici son emploi des différents médiums. En
figeant le déséquilibre, c’est une nouvelle limite qu’il fait vaciller.

Sinds 2007 is Brussel zijn artistiek werkterrein. Het surrealistische verleden van de
stad stemt perfect overeen met zijn scherpe zin voor het absurde. In deze originele
tentoonstelling, na zijn residentie in het MAAC, zet Lahlou nog een stap verder
en kristalliseert het mixen van allerlei media zich in een beeldhouwwerk. Door de
instabiliteit vast te leggen, overschrijdt hij een nieuwe grens.
en French artist with Moroccan and Spanish parents, Mehdi-George Lahlou
has chosen Brussels as his creative ground since 2007. The surrealist past of the
city blends with his sharp sense of absurdity, whereby he combines Arab-Muslim
and Judaeo-Christian cultures. With a rather transgressive irony, he intertwines the
religious codes and aesthetics of his double identity, to better evade the stereotypes
associated with the body, sexuality and affiliation. In this new exhibition stemming
from his residency at MAAC, Mehdi George Lahlou is asserting his approach, in
particular through the sculpture, which is crystallising his use of different medium.
Fixing what’s off balance, he brings down a new boundary.
