The European Construction Process in a Historical Perspective, 1945‐<strong>2010</strong> (fr/en)Module Module 6.1 – Semestre 1ECTS D 3 ECTS S 3 ECTSTutorRené LeboutteRequirements /LearningOutcomesCourseDescriptionType <strong>of</strong> CourseAfter attending the lectures a student should be able to :identify different contemporary approach to the History <strong>of</strong> Europe in the 20 th centuryunderstand the connections between the political and socio‐economic spheres <strong>of</strong> the Europeanintégrationadopt a critical analysis <strong>of</strong> the literature on the European integrationhave a good command <strong>of</strong> the digital libraries related to the subject.The construction <strong>of</strong> European Union, involves not only the diplomatic and economic processes<strong>of</strong> negotiating the European Community treaties but above all the socio‐cultural dimension <strong>of</strong> anunique experience to establish and consolidate peace and collaboration amongst people.Beyond European Law and European Politics, this process is clearly rooted in History. Beyond anecessary historical introduction to the “European machinery”, the course intends to focus onthe Historical dimension <strong>of</strong> the European Construction in its multiple facets: political, economic,social, cultural and intellectual ones. As the historical approach will clearly demonstrate, the“Construction <strong>of</strong> an European Community” is not at all obvious, simple, definitive and inevitable.The course will introduce the major structures and events surrounding the historical process <strong>of</strong>the construction <strong>of</strong> the European community: nineteenth century precursors <strong>of</strong> the idea <strong>of</strong>Europe; the Nazi project for European unification in its social, political and economic aspects;the Marshall Plan and economic co‐operation in Europe post‐1945; Schumann Plan for social,political and economic integration, 1950; creation and workings <strong>of</strong> the European Coal and SteelCommunity; the formation <strong>of</strong> the Treaty <strong>of</strong> Rome and the European Community; theenlargements <strong>of</strong> the Community.Aim: To present the process <strong>of</strong> European integration in its fullhistorical context and to introduce students to the complexities <strong>of</strong> post‐war European History.This course is intended to sharpen skills in independent learning, through library work andpersonal preparation, and in IT, including word‐processing and internet searching.LectureReading BITSCH, Marie‐Thérèse : Histoire de la construction européenne : De 1945 à nos jours.
