A Propos Balzac:Honoré <strong>de</strong> Balzac (May 20, 1799 – August 18, 1850), bornHonoré Balzac, was a nineteenth-century French novelist andplaywright. His work, much of which is a sequence (or Romanfleuve)of almost 100 novels and plays collectively entitled <strong>La</strong>Comédie humaine, is a broad, often satirical panorama ofFrench society, particularly the petite bourgeoisie, in the yearsafter the fall of Napoléon Bonaparte in 1815—namely the periodof the Restoration (1815–1830) and the July Monarchy(1830–1848). Along with Gustave Flaubert (whose work he influenced),Balzac is generally regar<strong>de</strong>d as a founding father ofrealism in European literature. Balzac's novels, most of whichare farcical <strong>com</strong>edies, feature a large cast of well-<strong>de</strong>fined characters,and <strong>de</strong>scriptions in exquisite <strong>de</strong>tail of the scene of action.He also presented particular characters in different novelsrepeatedly, sometimes as main protagonists and sometimesin the background, in or<strong>de</strong>r to create the effect of aconsistent 'real' world across his novelistic output.
